Budget Getaways Review
Eikelaan is for those who like their bread with a thick layer of full cream butter.
On offer at this neat working farm with wheat, vines and cattle is a pair of semi-detached luxury units and a newly added two-bedroomed cottage, all fronted by an open vista of green fields merging into blue mountain – an appealing contrast of the soft and rugged.
The cottages are light and airy and decorated in natural hues and textures. Wide windows and double doors drench the interior in light, terracotta floors inject the rustic country edge, offset by warm sisal mats, natural cream curtains, crisp white linen and thick duvets.
All have indoor fireplaces, makeing for cozy winters in a corner of the world where snow on the nearby mountains isn't uncommon. On the other hand, if you’re dropping in during the summer months you’ll be thrilled to know the units have air-con and overhead fans, as well as easy access to a swimming pool (with lapa).
Factoring in the sleeper couch, the two one-bedroomed units, the Witzenberg and the Obiekwa, theoretically sleep four, but are realistically designed for two adults – with or without offspring.
The Winterhoek, a two-bedroomed cottage is suited to a larger family, and sleeps up to six, with a en suite, queen-sized main bedroom and a second twin room and central bathroom. The living room has a further two single stack beds.
Stepping outside, the smaller cottages share a tiled patio and a broad stretch of green lawn, while the larger unit has its own stoep, with outside braai
Venturing further afield, the farm has three dams for dunking and fishing for carp, plenty of wide open space for bracing walks between high tea and dinner, as well as a barnyard of farm animals and nervous buck roaming the fields.
For a comfortable and undemanding weekend in the country that will suit both discerning locals and tourists, Eikelaan is the way to go.
"Such a great setting nestled below the mountain ranges just outside of Tulbagh. All amenities neat and tidy with the extra special touches that make Eikelaan the great place it is. Our first night as a married couple was spent there and we arrived to a great setting, very hospitable owners and a lovely bottle of wine on the house. We will be back soon!"

"Having enjoyed my fair share of some wonderful B&B's and the likes, Eikelaan certainly topped my list of favourites. It truly is a must for anyone planning a getaway. Nestled amidst the mountains, its a mere 5 minutes drive outside of Tulbagh. The cottages are quaint, beautiful and provide for everything one could possibly need. Coupled with majestic views, Eikelaan is indeed food for one's soul if you're looking to get out of the rat race. Highly recommended to all."

"Once again a magical weekend spent with friends at this hidden away gem. The gods gave us 36-degrees but the farm reciprocated with a sparkling inviting cool pool which we utilized to the extreme. The town offered us a wonderfully delicious breakfast at Things I love, the gourmet sandwich is nearly as gorgeous as the view from the stoep from Eikelaan's "lapa". Delectable farm bred free range chickens and lamb available to purchase which our bunch ordered by the tons and delivered to your door by the friendly and accommodating owners of Eikelaan. The farm has plenty more gastronomical delights on offer such as grape jam, 5-star rated extra virgin olive oil and beautifully sized eggs. The prices are ridiculous cheap and worth every cent. Beautiful scenic drive back home over the Bainskloof Pass- a fantastic ending to a brilliant weekend."

"What can I say! Four of the best days with the family ever, just loved every single minute. From the go kart, to the table tennis champs, to the animals, just a beautiful place and wonderful hospitality. Francois was a gem, so patient, so tactful with the kids, taking them to feed the cows, and the list goes on. You don't expect that to happen so the "added value" is priceless. For the price we paid and what we got, really a steal, we will be back! p.s. to Lynette for making the effort to call me to tell me what I left behind and arrangements for me to collect in Cape Town, thanks you! Just being made to feel like a part of your wonderful life for a few days has been so good for the soul."

"A little piece of heaven earth - the place to be just to chillax with friends. A lovely lapa where you can burn the midnight fires into the wee hours. Great pool to refresh in - that is if the ducks give you a chance. This is truly home away from home, fresh air, beautiful paths to run or mountain bike. Great restaurants, lovely wine farms and don't forget the hosts will go the extra mile to make your stay delightful and memorable. Olives, olive oil homemade "konfyt" all on offer - just waiting for that first wine batch! Eikelaan owners and staff - this was plaas hospitality at it's very best!"
