From R695 - R895.00 per equipped tent
Situated on a small, environmentally conscious farm, 28km from Swellendam, !Xairu Tented Bush Retreat is a rustic bush camp with two equipped, permanent tents, or an additional two unequipped tents for those who’re able to bring their own campaign equipment.
If bright lights and plush amenities are what you’re after, then !Xairu Tradu isn’t going to be for you. But if it’s a beautiful and wild setting, with hiking trails, mountain bike routes and general outdoor activities…and of course a love for camping, then this one may be for you.
Taking a look at the two equipped tents first, namely Blue Crane and Weaver’s Nest. Each of these canvas tents are built on a raised wooden platform with a small patio area at the front. Down on ground level you’ve got a fire pit and braai. Indoors the tent is divided into a bedroom with a double bed and a living area / kitchen which is equipped with a dining table, all cutlery and crockery, a kitchen sink as well as a cooler box. Each tent has solar lighing lighting installed. At the back of each tent is the compost loo, shower with solar heater and hand basin. There are no fridges, but there is a gas burner for cooking.
If you’re wanting to jump a notch down the ladder of basic, and you’ve got all your camp gear, you just need a tent right? Well then Otter’s Pool and Dung Beetle are both pre-erected tents, which are set up ready to accommodate you and your camping gear. Set apart from each other, but within easy reach, these two tents share a central ablution and communal kitchen area. The ablutions have baths and showers with water heated via a donkey boiler.
Apart from the trails and general outdoor vibes mentioned earlier, you can hire a horse for horseback riding, attend local art classes, learn about the surrounding Renosterveld conservation or sample some locally brewed Limoncello liquor. Chat to your hosts about all of the above.
For the hardened camper, and even the slightly softer ones, !Xairu Tradu is a good match for a stay out in the wilds, without the hassle of 100% wild camping.
