Budget Getaways Review
A lot of places along the Garden Route, particularly Plettenberg Bay, have become such popular holiday destinations that being able to enjoy the quiet beauty and tranquil natural surroundings on offer seems almost impossible. But, away from those rushing crowds queuing down Odlands Drive to get the best spot at the beach, about 13km from the centre of town, lies Protea Wilds Retreat.
This beautiful farm stretches over 270 hectares of raw, unspoilt nature. For a place to rest your head, you can pick and choose between six self-catering studio style units. Each of these units is ensuite (shower and loo), includes a fully equipped kitchenette and a dining table and chairs.
Common to all are semi-private patios and a deck, each with seating and soothing views over the surrounding mountains and valleys. Each patio has a removable partition, should a group book units alongside each other.
The Fynbosskerm, a communal area that features a cosy lounge with Satellite TV, a huge hearty fireplace, a dining room with wood-buring stove and a shared kitchen, is within a short walk of the units. If you prefer to steer clear of the kitchen, you may enjoy lounging around the braai or cooling off in the splash pool.
As for activities…where do we even start! Order a delicious gourmet picnic hamper and enjoy it at the farm’s picnic spot which looks out over the surrounding indigenous forest (also a great spot for sundowners or morning coffee). There are Hiking and mountain biking options galore, both on the farm and in the nearby surrounds (The well-known Harkerville MTB trails are just down the road). Enjoy some wine tasting at the nearby vineyards, or head off on a guided quad bike trail on the neighbouring farm.
