Budget Getaways Review

Dotted along the lush banks of the gorgeous Touws River in Wilderness, Pirates Creek Self-Catering Chalets really gets you immersed in some breathtaking surroundings. Literally a stones throw from your outside deck to the water’s edge, the easy going vibe of riverside living, combined with the close proximity to Wilderness village, make a good recipe for a super family getaway.

Diving right in (to the accommodation that is, not the river - that comes later), the units consist of 8 character log cabins, four of them set up as single storey, four-sleepers and four of them as double story six-sleepers. The four-sleepers have two separate bedrooms (queen and twin), while the six-sleepers have a queen and two twin rooms. All units have a bathroom with shower, well equipped kitchen and a comfy living area. The outside decks gaze out over the river and have braai areas at each. Common to all is good a good WiFi connection.

Packing list wise, top of the page would be SUP’s, kayaks, fishing rods, boogey boards, water-wings or whatever floats your boat - this is a water destination of note. For those who’re a little weary of the dark river water (it’s black colour is from the tannins released by the trees along its banks), then there is a communal swimming pool which is available to use. The river’s your playground here, it’s all yours to enjoy.

If you’re not mucking about in the water, then there’s always the beach at Wilderness to explore, plenty of nearby hiking trails (Ask about the Kingfisher Trails), lazy canoe trips along the river to Island Lake or even a day trip to Sedgefield or Knysna. Wilderness village has some super restaurants and coffee shops, all within walking distance from your cabin - nice!

Whether you’re one family, two or even a group of friends, the cabins and cozy, the location serene, Pirates Creek looks to be a sure win for a great Garden Route getaway.
