Budget Getaways Review
Sitting high above the Wilderness Lakes in rural Hoekwil, Oakhurst Farm has got the getaway recipe down to a tee: Plenty of good ol’ farm fun, clean country air, and a platter of rustic-luxury accommodation that will knock your socks off.
The Forge, Oakhurst's flagship, fits into a category of its own: 'Romantic Escape Perfected." The meticulously renovated Oakhurst Farm Cottages are tailormade for families with kids and in-laws in tow, while The Schoolyard is ideal for those wanting to be close together, yet have their own space to retreat to at leisure.
But lets kick off with The Forge - a romantic nest combining high octane wow factor, solitude, rustic elegance and easy living.
Ever so carefully restored, The Forge features yellowwood beams, percale cotton linen, soft towels and oodles of rustic-romantic ambiance.
Sleeping six in total, the main bedroom is ensuite, has a king bed and elegant furnishings. The second bedroom with king bed is housed in the original stone portion of the building, while a further two single beds for kids can be found in the mezzanine loft room.
The open-plan living room with fireplace and fully equipped kitchen opens out via glass doors onto a covered deck and patio, to a vista of sweeping lawns and forest views.
It gets better. There's a plunge pool out on the deck and even your own wood-fired hot tub to soak away in. Try out the shower: open-air and more fantastic views over forest and river. Maybe a little breezy for some in bad weather, but hey, that's the price you pay.
Moving on to the new five-pack of family cottages, these were once home to Oakhurst’s workers, many of whom worked this land for generations. In tribute, the cottages are aptly named after their colourful characters.
Kween’s Kaya, Awies Attic, Leenies Lair, Hans’s Hollow and Nick’s Nook are identical, with landscaped lawns and views over the surrounding forest.
Each has three bedrooms (a double and two twins) and shared bathroom with shower. The living room, with wooden floors and wood burning fireplace, is open-plan to a small, fully-equipped kitchen.
Leading off from the living room is a generous deck with built-in braai area and dining table - yet another perfect spot for that glass of fine red and a roaring fire. As with The Forge, each cottage has its own wood-fired hot tub on deck level. Nice!
Moving along... in what once was the Schoolyard, this building has been lovingly restored and converted into three charactar-packed, fully equipped units, each with a double and twin bedroom.
The long school building houses three of these units, namely Landon’s Loft, Holly’s Hangout and Anna’s Apartment. The latter two are ideal for larger groups sharing, as they include inter-leading doors between each unit. All have independent braai areas, patio’s, kitchenettes and a bathroom with shower. In the Oakhurst tradition, each unit has its own wood-fired hot tub.
The Schoolyard puts you right in the centre of the action, and within walking distance (500m) of the children’s play area, the farm dam and the swimming reservoir. With those gorgeous rural views and fresh country air, there’s plenty of reason to get out and explore.
Easing the logistics, Oakhurst now boasts its own farm shop, which includes a coffee shop. Here you can buy fresh and frozen farm produce, milk from the dairy, free-range eggs, cooldrinks and just about anything else you need for your stay. To ease the pain of meal planning, get your orders in for the Oakhurst breakfast, braai or DIY burger baskets, beautifully presented and delivered to your accommodation, ready for you to prepare. If you're after a meal out, Wilderness itself is also not too far down the way, as are a couple of decent restaurants.
The farm has several interesting historic relics - the quaint Oakhurst chapel takes centre stage and is well worth a pop-in and a serious contender for your own big day.
Nearby waterfalls, farm walks and forest trails, a gold mine of nearby mountain biking options, guided horse riding trails on the farm and a MTB pump track are all up for grabs.
“The Forge at Oakhurst is the loveliest place we have ever stayed in my opinion!” says one guest. It's not hard to see why.
Go on then, treat yourself.

"The Forge at Oakhurst Farm Cottages - LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! After our 1st visit in 2014 I knew we would be back! Loved it then and love it even more now - if that's possible. The new additions of an extra double bedroom and gorgeous bathroom are just amazing - you feel like you are actually sleeping right in the forest. The stoep area has been covered and opens up to the rolling hills and forest - its just the most wonderful place to chill and relax. The attention to detail at the Forge and every where at Oakhurst is just amazing - it really is a very special place. Thank you to the Oakhurst team for everything - we had a wonderful time and YES - we will be back. A summer visit seems in order so we can use the gorgeous stone pool at the Forge. This place is somewhere you just have to visit - its GORGEOUS!"

"Oakhurst Farm is an excellent place, well kitted out in a superb location with great walks on the farm and plenty to do and see in the area. Our hosts were helpful and informative (especially when we watched the daily milking of the cows)."

"We had a wonderful stay at Oakhurst Farm. It was very cold and rainy while we were there but the indoor fireplace kept us very warm and toasty. We would love to go back when the weather is good to enjoy the gorgeous stoep!"

"Another perfect mini-break for the family. The forge is a deliciously-scrummy combination of a cosy, rustic setting and working dairy farm, with lashings of nature and wholesome fun, topped off with fluffy bedding, full cream milk and homemade rusks, we loved every last bit of it, including the occasional visit from your gorgeous dogs, the odd bird and snail stopping by, and even an early appearance from Easter Bunny! Can't wait to come back soon and maybe spend more time with our human hosts too!"

"There are many very cool places on this website, but rarely have I come across a place this charming and picturesque. Every little detail in the Forge and its garden is something you would want to write home about. Cleverly crafted and made with the heart. I would live there, if my life was a holiday. The farm eggs and home made rusks were very enjoyable, too. Coming back again and again."

"Dit was n fantastiese wegbreek en die opset van die plek is baie kinders vriendelik. Sal eendag weer terug gaan om die daaglikse roep van die visarende te beleef. Net jammer die bass in die dam was bietjie skaam om te byt."

"We arrived after a full day in the car from Cape Town. What a heavenly place. It was like something out of a story book. Misty and romantic. We did not want to go anywhere other than to relax at the Forge Cottage. The aerated flow of the cottage gave it a special country feeling. Very peaceful and relaxing with everything there. Our doggies also loved to run around the cottage and was like a holiday for them as well. The walks around the farm were fantastic and the Hosts Jake and Claire and Jake were super. Only a few minutes drive to Wilderness and Sedgefield or anywhere around the area makes it an ideal escape with everything on offer. We will be back."

"Wow what a gorgeous place! We really had a lovely time and 2 nights was way to short, we definitely could have stayed longer! We loved the walks with your dogs leading the way and the farm fresh milk and seeing the cows being milked and riding bikes on the farm roads and even your cat came to sit with us by the fire. The boys slept like champions and loved the loft. The Forge really is a beautiful place and the attention to detail is stunning. Love love love it! We all hope to see you again and visit you beautiful farm! "

"Lovely weekend away with my hubby and son in a very quaint and beautiful cottage on the edge of a forest it was perfect. Only complaint was there was so much to do we really needed another day to get to the dairy and the waterfall walk. Will definitely be back."
(visited March 2014)
"The cottages are right on the edge of the forest, and platforms and climbing frames have been erected for kids under the trees. The cottages are furnished with amazing attention to detail, quirky and comfortable. Highly recommended."

"I really have nothing bad to say about staying at Oakhurst Farm. This place is the ultimate farmsy getaway and it is so tastefully decorated. It is only a matter of time and I will be back there smelling the roses."
(visited April 2013)
"Thanks Claire and Jake for 2 very relaxing days in your beautiful cottage which has been so lovingly restored and tastefully decorated. We were very comfortable and warm even on the one rainy, cold night. The peaceful atmosphere and rustic charm of The Forge made for a very pleasant stay and will be fondly remembered."

"The hospitality of the family was exceptional. This is a great venue if you have small children who would enjoy the country life."
(visited December 2011)
"The Forge at Oakhurst is the loveliest place we have ever stayed in my opinion! Jake, Claire and family are wonderfully warm and hospitable, and the cottage has a peaceful, serene atmosphere. It is a real haven away from the hustle and bustle of our stressful daily lives! We first visited The Forge on honeymoon in Dec 2009 and have returned several times, and plan to do so many times more in the future!"
(visited December 2011)
"We stayed for three nights in the middle of December - the setting was tranquil and Claire and her girls were most hospitable - even the dogs! All facilities were excellent (I did have to get used to the large spiders though!). We loved the availability of fresh milk and eggs from the farm! Also loved that we could wander off to the waterfall on the farm and enjoy some solitude. One night was quite cool and we found that perhaps this cottage was not suitable for winter getaways (the kitchen/lounge area was a bit draughty and too exposed to the elements) - although there were heating appliances (oil and gas heaters) and a fireplace to keep it relatively cosy. As it was summer, we were not fully equipped with heavy duty winter clothes! The bedroom though was sheltered and very very cosy. I would highly recommend the cottage for couples."
