Budget Getaways Review
This beautiful spot in the majestic Outeniqua’s is no Dark Side of the Moon.
In fact, a few days at Beyond the Moon Guest Farm is guaranteed to bring back the sparkle and have you, err... shining on like a crazy diamond.
Spread across 24ha of lush green this is Garden Route at it's best: rolling farmland, pristine indigenous forest, mountain vistas, mountain streams bubbling past your bedroom, and enough tranquility to heal the wounds inflicted by months in the concrete jungle.
Accommodation at Beyond the Moon is a casual mix of five cottages with relaxed decor, ideal for families and larger groups keen on doubling up. The more private units even arguably fall into the category of romantic forest hideaway.
Kicking off with Francolin (sleeps 5) and Kestrel (sleeps 4), these are semi- detached and therefore a great option for two families sharing. The units spill on to a common outdoor living area (but with own braais) and lovely views over the forest and mountains. Francolin has one double room and a separate kids room with three single beds, while Kestrel comes with a double room and a second room with a bunk bed. Both have one bathroom with shower. Outside, there's an open stoep, braai place and stretch of lawn for the kids to baljaar on.
Next up is Froggy Lodge (sleeps 7), perched on the banks of a large pond filled with lilies and plenty of birdlife. Located in a forest clearing, visiting bushbuck and the occasional curious bush pig poking its snout through the dense foliage are part of your weekend. With a single bathroom and two bedrooms with Queen beds, an additional bunk bed in the second room and a bed in the living room, two chilled families can squeeze in here. Like all the units the kitchen is equipped and the decor and furnishings casual. The living area comes with fireplace and leads onto the stoep, braai area and water's edge.
Kingfisher Cottage (sleeps 5) also sits in forest clearing next to the vlei, with impressive views from the unique garden bathroom and shower. The cottage consists of two rooms, one of which is the bedroom (with double and a bunk bed), the other comprising the kitchen and living area (and with another bunk bed). The living room opens out onto a braai area shaded by a beautiful weeping willow packed with weaver nests - no sleeping late here.
Loerie Lodge (sleeps 8) is crisp, fresh, spacious and inviting with stunning views over the pond and surrounding forests. You'll find four bedrooms, two of which are queen (one en-suite) and the other a twin and a double bunk room - great for the kids.
Finally, River Sanctuary (sleeps 5) is for families wanting to be in the thick of nature. This quaint timber cottage is tucked in a Hansel and Gretel indigenous forest setting, with a crystal-clear stream running through it. It’s got one bedroom with a single bed and two bunk beds, and a further double bed squeezed between the bedroom and the dining area. Besides the bath-only bathroom the outside hot-shower is the way to go. The living room (with much needed fireplace) opens onto the stoep and garden. Families with heaps of kids will have a blast here - as they will, for that matter, at all the other options.
Apart from chilling out at your accommodation all day, there’s plenty to do in and around the farm, including a 45-minute forest walk, miles of safe cycling tracks, and a trampoline and slide to keep the kids out of your hair. With the beaches at Wilderness a short drive away, the Knysna forest nearby and the Saturday market at Sedgefield within striking distance, life at Beyond The Moon couldn’t get much better.
Again, to sum it all up we pay homage to the Pink Floyd classic: “Wish you were here."

"A little piece of heaven! Beautiful setting and great facilities. Great location to explore the Garden Route from. My friends and I had a great time. So much so, that I almost want to keep the secret to myself but thought others also deserve to experience the beauty, peace and quiet of this wonderful getaway."

"One of the best places I have been to in a long time. It was like being on a game farm only much cheaper. The venue is superb and we watched baboons visiting the river every day. The host is excellent and will help with whatever queries you might have. We felt safe and never needed to worry about crime."

"Absolutely stunning! The place was clean, tidy and so stylish too. Sophia was a great host. We will definitely recommend to others!"

"Beautiful tranquil setting had it only been hubby and I, unfortunately we had a two year old runner that bolted towards the lake every chance she had. Next time we would enjoy the place alone or choose a different cottage, overall loved the place!"

"We (2 adults, 2 teenagers, 1 tween) had a lovely stay at Beyond the Moon. Everything you want for a lazy family getaway: beautiful surroundings, cozy fireplace, outdoor braai, peace and quiet. The bedrooms are not huge, but there is enough space in the open plan living area to lounge around and read. The cottage is well equipped with more than enough of everything, even some firewood. We would definitely like to return."

"We had an amazing time!"

"What a lovely place to get away from it all, even the typical holiday rush. Quiet and secluded on the edge of the forest; the scenery, peace and quiet gave us a perfect start to our December holiday at an affordable rate considering the time of year. We stayed in River Sanctuary with a double bed and five single beds that provided ample space for our family of five. The unit is quite basic but we lacked for nothing, its rustic nature adding to the experience. With the unit being of timber construction with probably no insulation, expect it to be cold inside during winter. In summer this is of little concern since time is spent outdoors. Two stacks of firewood was supplied for the fireplace and braai. Hospitality was great and the service good. Our hosts checked on us to ensure we were happy and had everything we need without being intrusive or compromising our privacy. Good balancing act! We wish we could have stayed longer, but our friends living in the Western Cape are already planning to visit after we told them about it."

"This was one of the best holidays we have had in a long time. We simply loved our little cottage, which is clearly lovingly cared for by the staff at Beyond the Moon. My three year old and I were especially impressed by the out-door shower over looking the stream running past the cottage. It is ideal for children, with lovely walks and a dam to swim in. The people at the nearby village of Hoekwil are warm and friendly. The cheesecake is good too!"

"Hi, we enjoyed our stay at Beyond the Moon but the lack of sufficient cooking pots and dishes was a big problem. They provided a single enamel pot of which the inside bottom was encrusted with burnt food. I took this pot to the main house and asked for more pots. This was forthcoming only after a second enquiry, and was one stainless steel pot without a knob on its lid. As the owner was not at home I dealt with a teenage son, who tried his very best to be helpful and friendly. We loved the innovative woodwork in the stay, but when the blinds were closed for the night the pull-up rope hung right where one would get 'noosed' by it in the night, on one's way to the toilet! There was no way to solve that problem, except warn my husband that I may scream as if the Philistines are upon me in the dead of night if I should feel this 'noose' around my neck. This rope is on the far side blind in the main bedroom of Kestrel Cottage. We loved the forest setting and Forest Venue, the other cottages around the dam, the wonderful trees of many kinds, and the wealth of birds. Also, maybe the owner can make a bit more money having a farm store providing the basics as the farm is 14 km from Wilderness and shops of a good size. The staff member who received us was friendly, but clearly lacked professional training."

"We stayed in Froggy Cottage which has a very nice setting and stunning views. Friendly staff. The cottage is fully equipped and has everything one would expect. Free wood for the fireplace and braai was a nice touch. Really relaxing and getting away from everything, even cellphone reception.""

"We had a wonderful time at the Kesrel Cottage. The break away from a busy lifestyle was well rewarded. I must also add, the wooden tops in the kitchen and the unique little tops all over the cottage is beautiful. Thanks again for a lovely time. We hope to visit again soon."

"An ideal hideaway in the most beautiful of settings! Had a wonderfully relaxing three days staying in the beautiful River Sanctuary cabin - a little piece of paradise, which was honeymoon perfect for us. The location and surrounds is idyllic, the hospitality superb and the cabin is neat and very well equipped. We will definitely love to come visit soon again, especially to come and see the beautiful Loerie again and again."
