R380pp for the farmhouse (R200pp kids under 12); R350pp for the open barn-style cottage (R200pp kids under 12); R150pp for the bush camp (R80pp kids under 12)
Perched high on the Langeberg slopes, Leopard Trail Guestfarm offers an action-packed nature weekend.
Walks, hikes, kloofing, mountain biking and three 4x4 trails, six farm dams for swimming and fishing, educational tours of the farm and mountain, herds of farm animals, they’re all up for grabs here.
In fact, there is so much to do you probably won’t need a roof over your head. But if you do, there's a choice between a mammoth outydse farmhouse, a raw bushcamp pitched in the wild, and a open barn-style cottage that sleeps six.
The farmhouse has a laid-back persona ideally suited to a group of friends or extended family out for a good time in the country. It can accommodate a busload of 24 guests – a big selling point if you are travelling en masse. Simply furnished and very clean, the house features a mix of wooden floors and carpets, quasi-dorm bedrooms, a massive open hearth and two bathrooms. Your friendly hosts Johan and Lizette (who speaks fluent German) also throw in a heap of generous touches, like fresh bread, milk and fruit in season, and a bag or two of free wood on arrival. The result is a feel-good karma about all things Leopard Trail.
For something a little cosier the 'barn-style' cottage could be a good call. Furnished in the old traditional way it can sleep six guests in three bedrooms and comes with open-plan kitchen and lounge, one bathroom, two loos, and a nice deck.
Heading a little way into the mountain, past the dairy, sheep and orange groves, the bushcamp lies near the mouth of a kloof. It has an open lapa with a pit braai (and free wood!), another boma with an inside fireplace, a donkey system for hot water, rustic ablution blocks and a fairly exposed stretch of grass for camping. A swimming dam with rowing boat can be found nearby. The setting is both very private and natural, which is the appeal.
As Johan says, “The only thing you hear is the birds, wind and water.” So true Johan, so true.
