Budget Getaways Review
Oppikoppie is a built-to-order group getaway that consistently receives a mountain of glowing feedback.
True to name, Oppiekoppie perches on a hill above a fruit and wine farm, 14km from Bonnievale. Stretching out below is a view of farm dams, vineyards, orchards and the alluring Riviersonderend Mountains in the distance. (There is a tar road some distance from the cottage).
Comprising an airy house with a catacomb of bedrooms, it can at a push accommodate a large group of 14 laid-back friends or family members.
Stepping through the front door, you will find a huge convivial living room, with an indoor braai forming the centrepiece, a fully-equipped kitchen, two bathrooms and a total of five bedrooms to accommodate your tribe.
Apart from sitting around the open fire and tending to the potjie, there's more than enough to do, including long walks and a dam stocked with plenty of fish and a canoe. There's also a great platter of well-known wine estates within a short drive of the house. All offer Saturday wine tasting and lunches.
Give it a go - you won't be disappointed!
"We had a wonderful stay at Oppikoppie Self-catering Guesthouse. It is spacious and accommodated 3 families (with 2 children each) very comfortably, with 5 bedrooms, a large lounge area with plenty of seating (and a wonderful long table for board games), indoor and outdoor braai options and all the facilities we needed. We enjoyed watching the sunsets from the balcony, and had a spectacular lightening show the one evening. The weather was very hot on 2 days and everyone swam in the dam and had a great time. Lots of things to do in the area including wine farms, mountain biking, walking, swimming or running. We will definitely be back!"

"This house is a real gem. We were a large group of 11 people and this spacious house easily accommodated all of us. The house is fully equipped and has a lovely BIG fire place. It however did lack a dishwasher :-) The owner was very accommodating and friendly and quick to respond to messages. We had a lovely stay and will definitely be back."

"Oppikoppie is well equipped. I lacked for nothing. The entertainment area is spacious, comfortable and can easily accommodate a large group. The road to Oppikoppie is easily accessible with a regular sedan car. The atmosphere and view is bucolic. There a many walks, a place to swim and a convenient undercover area next to the dam for braaing and relaxing. The cellphone reception is poor but that never worried us. The owners were fantastic. They made sure that we were comfortable and were quick to respond to any queries."

"This was our 4th time back to Oppikoppie and we are already talking about our next visit. Everything about this place makes it amazing. Natasha is so helpful and goes out of her way to make sure it is perfect. The house is perfectly situated for visits to nearby wine farms, walks and Montagu but also great to just sit by the dam or on the patio and relax."

"Absolutely beautiful and very peaceful, wonderful hosts, everything was very clean and so practical, just the load shedding was a bit difficult without back up."

"We have been to Oppikoppie a number of times already and again absolutely loved it! The venue can very easily accommodate larger groups ( we were 13 ) and there is ample space for the little people to run around. The huge fireplace in the living area and the long table at which leisurely meals take place remain our favourite features. The house is very well equipped with everything to make this a 'must do'. Should you wish to leave the comfort of the venue, many wine farms are in close proximity."

"We had a lovely visit on this farm - beautiful views, ease of booking, friendliness of host! The house has everything one needs to have a comfortable stay - only need to bring your food and towels. We had a LOVELY swim in the dam and the big dining room table made for wonderful lunches and dinners between a group of friends. The view from the stoep is amazing! Will definitely recommend Oppikoppi for a group of friends to visit together. Thank you for a wonderful stay."

"What a great guesthouse. The layout is great for family or friends to get together and have a wonderful time. Kids can enjoy the jungle gym and walk down to the dam or explore the veld! It is also close to some amazing wine farms! Highly recommended and we will definitely go again!"

"This is the third time we have stayed at Oppikoppie and it certainly will not be the last. Natasja goes out of her way to be accommodating and the house and farm have everything you need for a relaxed weekend with friends and family."

"Oppiekoppi is al vir vele kere ons groep vriende se afskakel huisie uit die stad! Vriendelike diens van Natasha en Koos - hul is nou al ou 'vriende'! Dis 'n heerlike saamkuier en cosy huis wat naby is aan al die lekker wynplase in die Robertson/Bonnivale area. En natuurlik is die groot kaggel/braaiplek altyd 'n wenner!"
(visited November 2019)
"We use the facility for star-gazing during week nights and it's fantastic. The spacious accommodation is well suited to group visits. The large parking area ideal for setting up telescopes and the lack of light pollution is ideal for our purposes. The prosperity and hospitality of the hosts only to be found on the "platteland" - fantastic."

"We absolutely loved our stay at Oppikoppie over the Christmas period! Oppikoppie is ideal if you want to relax and rest properly, while still being close enough to amenities and other activities (i.e. Viljoensdrift and Van Loveren) if you want to explore a bit. The house is great for kids as well with a big dam with a canoe to play in and cool down (it gets quite hot in summer!). We even got spoiled with wine and "vetkoek" upon arrival (always welcome!)."
(visited Dec 2016)
"A few years back hubby and I decided that we would never visit the same accommodation twice... well this was our third time at the warm homely and relaxing Oppikoppie with the majestic mountainous scenery. The guys enjoyed the 'trying to catch a fish' experience. The kids had a blast messing in the dam with gumboots and playing in the park. My mom and Aunt soaked in the morning fresh air outside with tea. Our evenings in front of the fireplace with games was the ice- breaker. The canoe is always great fun for those who dared going. It is such a pleasure returning with family and friends, sharing the pleasures with them and thank you to Natasha and Koos for sharing in your beauty. I can still taste the freshly made vetkoek. Mmmmmmm!"

"This is perfect for a group / family getaway. We bundled 7 adults and 5 kids into cars and headed out to Bonnievale in the middle of winter. Our first day was sunny and bright and we fished and took chilly dips in the dam. The next day it clouded over and rained and we played games, visited the town, found some antique bargains and wine and headed home. The inside braai area is perfect for indoor braai's. They also have potjie pots, so we had an awesome potjie. The next day cleared so we took the kids on a hike on the paths behind the cottage. At our hosts' recommendations we went to Klipdrift and Van Loveren for brandy and wine tasting - great recommendations! We had such a great time together and the kids were quite upset to have to leave at the end of our stay. I also realized it would take me about a year to do justice to all the wine-tasting on offer in the area. I just need to work on sponsors to get through them all. Pack up the friends and family and head here. Bring games and food and just relax, enjoy and make memories!"

"This was our third visit to Oppikoppie and like always our highlight for a group of friends' getaway. With awesome hospitality, neat and clean house and cosy feeling. We're always excited for the vetkoeke which was made with love from our stunning hosts. Best place to visit with a nice relaxing atmosphere. "

"Spent the Easter Weekend 2016 here. The facilities are great. Safe for children and our two dogs. The owners are very friendly and accommodating and make you feel very welcome. The vetkoek provided by the owners was wonderful and very tasty. We would recommend this place to anyone wanting time out on a farm setting. Great value for money."

"We visited Oppikoppie as a group of girlfriends with our little ones and absolutely loved our stay! It is good value for money, a spacious home, clean and a great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful view. Our vetkoek on arrival was a highlight and Natasja made us feel very welcome. We saw two little tortoises during our stay. Our uninvited guest for the night during our braai was a red roman spider which had all of us on top of our chairs, but he soon disappeared and were never seen again. We will definitely be back again with friends soon!"

"What a great place!! Koos and Natasja are so lovely and they both made us feel absolutely welcome. The vetkoek and wine were above and beyond what we expected. The house had everything we needed and was great for the kids. We will definitely go back there again."

"When you arrive at Oppiekoppie you are greeted by the happy and welcoming Koos and Natasja. Later on in the day we were surprised some fruit, Vetkoek and a bottle of wine. Bonnievale has a lot to offer. For the wine lovers there are many wine farms who offer free tastings. If wine is not your thing there are river cruises, fishing, hiking and canoeing offered as well. If you happen to be there in winter you might have a chance to see snow, just remember to pack warmly."

"Toilets got a bit blocked after first night but the rest of our stay was fantastic."

"Wonderful place for a family weekend. Safe for the children to run around and wonderful indoor fire place for either a braai or just a fire to keep the house warm. The owners are very friendly, accommodating and make you feel very welcome. The bonus is getting a bowl of vetkoek with home made apricot jam and a very nice bottle of red wine on arrival. I would recommend this place to anyone wanting time out and those who appreciate a wonderful setting sun over the valley. No TV and bad cell phone reception are also a wonderful way of getting away from everyday things and enjoying the peace and quiet of farm life. "

"A wonderful house and perfect for a large get-together. Die vet-koek was heerlik, dankie! Despite our windy weather, the outside braai area and stoep was beautifully protected and we really enjoyed having the option of the large indoor fireplace and braai area too. The house comfortably accommodates 15-people and we never felt cramped. The dam was beautiful to swim and paddle in. We enjoyed trail runs and mountain bike rides in the area too. Hope to come again."

"A big thank you - We had an awesome weekend - it is not always easy to satisfy a group of 15 people but this venue certainly did it for our group."

"We visited Oppikoppie in December and we thoroughly loved our stay there. We were so spoilt on the first day with the arrival of fresh hot vetkoek and a bottle of chilled wine. What a welcome! The house and the facilities on offer could not be faulted. Views from the stoep over looking Bonnievale is magnificent and from the house looking down onto the dams...wow! Thank you to Natasja and her husband for making our stay at Oppikoppie an enjoyable one. We will be back (perhaps not in the hot December months, one misses a fan or an aircon), but ideally be back with a few more friends. One really has the opportunity to truly relax and appreciate the quietness that surrounds you! Thank you."

"A group of friends and I have made it tradition to escape to a remote part of the South Africa at least twice a year - and oh what an escape Oppikoppie was! Upon opening the door you're greeted by a warm ochre cottage, charming kitchen and stretching dining room area - the latter of which provided the perfect gathering spot for hours of fun and games. Literally a stone's throw away, we found a shimmering dam with a large braai spot where we took on the canoes (we didn't care about the leech warning) - we weren't going to let that put a damper on our fun there. The owner's were even sweet enough to offer up their pool! The only thing warmer than the hospitality of the hosts was the plate of golden brown home made vetkoek we received (eaten in 5.6 seconds flat - I'm sure a new record). If I had anything bad to say, I'd say the map was a little confusing because it looks as if you just continue on the N1 but you actually have to turn at the Robertson sign so our trip took a little longer but Oppikoppie was totally worth the wait. We will definitely be back!"

"The service at this particular establishment attests to the generosity of spirit of the owners who make a real effort to ensure their guests are comfortable. All the welcoming gifts, the sincere friendliness, the seclusion, the endless views and spacious abode with rustic yet appealing dcor, culminated in a memorable stay which we would gladly repeat in a hurry. Thanks, Natasja and Koos."

"Thanks Natasja and husband for having my daughter and friends to celebrate her 21st birthday. They really had ball of a time. Oppikoppie is the place to be if you want to get away from the city and your busy life. I was there previously and it was a great weekend, that's why I told my daughter to go to there. And thanks for the vetkoek - great plus. We are definitely coming again."

"We had a wonderful weekend, great spot for a getaway. Loads to do in the surrounding area with all the wine farms and the Klipdrift Distillery just around the corner. Oppikoppie is great for large groups of people and is family- and dog-friendly, and the indoor braai is ideal for heating up the house in winter, Thanks Koos and Natasha. PS. the vetkoek definitely lives up to its reputation. For those who like to plan their trip on GPS the co-ordinates are 3359'31.48"S 20 1'0.66"E but the map provided should get you there fine."

"I have been meaning to write to you since we left Oppiekoppie on the 14th of December. I just want to express our most sincere thanks for the most wonderful weekend, filled with your fantastic hospitality. That you brought us the extra vetkoek AND jam on the same evening as hosting a huge Christmas party will be remembered by all of us. Koos, thank you for helping us city people with the Donkey late at night after delivering plums. We are so grateful, it felt like we had a whole holiday and we can't wait to come back soon. As you see, we've sent through a booking request for the same weekend in 2009, and we hope Oppikoppi is available then.

"We were welcomed by Nastaja with some delicious vetkoek and wine. We were a group of 14 friends. The place is great for socialising both in winter or in summer as the lounge/dining area is large enough to seat everyone at the table or in front of the fire/braai place. Also close to many wine farms in the area so you can make the most of the wine tasting, which we did:-)"

"Koos and Natsja are wonderful hosts, delivering pancakes and vetkoek to this lovely venue with a fantastic view. The facilities are of an excellent standard and the indoor fire place/braai a splendid pleasure in the winter rain, with snow topping the surrounding mountains."

"What a weekend! It feels like some remote area, meantime you are 2 hours from Cape Town. The views are spectacular and the house is perfect. Everything we could have wanted in one place. We wanted to get away, relax, enjoy ourselves and maybe take a walk or two. We got what we bargained for and more! And what hosts! We'll be back for more!"
