Budget Getaways Review

Cape Point Cottage comes pretty close to fitting the fantasy weekend cottage. What's more, you don't need to drive forever and a day to live the dream.

Situated just five minutes (by car) from the front gate of Cape Point Nature Reserve and 7km along from Simon's Town proper, this historic stone cottage sits among a few others of its type in a steep cleft of mountainside below the winding Simon's Town/Cape Point tar ribbon. With mountain behind you and unrivalled views across False Bay to the front you're all set for an idyllic escape.

Cape Point Cottage itself blends unobtrusively into this dramatic setting, backed by a wooden revine and mountain stream, drawing on Mother earth's natural elements - a mix of stone and timber and glass, all pulled together, by the looks of it, into a very livable space.

The cottage is fully equipped with a fireplace, gas hob, fridge, sun-powered electricity and hot water, all linen and towels, and basic supplies like tea, coffee and biscuits. Modern technology comes in the form of a Weber braai and wireless internet. Looking at the pics, the decor and furnishings are comfortable and tastefully coordinated.

The great thing about Cape Point Cottage is that it gives the illusion of being in the middle of nowhere, but with none of the associated hassle of the real thing. Simon's Town and its many attractions lie just down the road (lovely ride on a bike!), as is the CBD itself - a mere hour by car. The 40-stair climb between the driveway and cottage is an adventure in and of itself. At R400 a head the cottage comes in higher than your average country getaway, but then again, think how  much you will be saving on fuel and time spent in the car.

A worthy spend in our view.

"This was such a beautiful landing, with the most amazing views. Very comfortable beds. We used both the house and the cottage. The bathrooms were rustic but amazing to have large tubs to soak in. The property caretaker and the property owner were incredibly helpful and we enjoyed seeing them on the property. There are several decks with unbelievably beautiful views of sunset, the stars and the ocean. The views from the large living room are mind and body elevating. And the fireplace nook was a treat. The kitchen were rustic but incredibly well stocked for all types of cooking. I would highly recommend for a family or for a small retreat. The main consideration is those with mobility issues, as it requires a relatively steep walk up steps to homes (both main house and cottage). Also, in the main house, the stairway is rather tight for tall folks, so to be mindful when walking up."

"We had a lovely time, enjoyed every minute. Place was beautiful and clean, Nature is breathtaking and everyone is really friendly and helpful. Will definitely return soon."

"Beautiful view, nice hiking trail, friendly service, and the cottage is well equipped."

"Keep up the good work!"

"Once again I had a wonderful stay in the cottage. A magical setting with the mountain behind you and the sea ahead of you. The cottage is adequately equipped with a cosy, warm atmosphere...Rosalind and her staff are extremely helpful and professional. Thank you, Teresai for always being around to ensure that all goes well. This is value for money at it's best. I will certainly be back."

"We needed a little local getaway after 6 months of lockdown and this was just the thing. The cottage is beautiful and the view over the sea and setting in the mountain is stunning. We had everything we needed, including a roaring fire to keep us cosy, while it rained most of the weekend, though we did manage some beach walks and a stroll up the mountain. The on-site staff were friendly and helpful, carrying our bags up the steep steps and making sure we had enough firewood etc."

"Excellent space to just relax and enjoy nature. Very clean with helpful and kind staff."

"It was amazing and lovely!"

"Perfect weekend away - beautiful scenery, cosy cottage and lovely warm fire! Highly recommended!"

"We chose this getaway for our honeymoon after some busy wedding planning. It was an absolute delight. Away from everything and everyone, and when we longed for some excitement it was only a short drive to either Fishhoek or City Bowl for world class dining and entertainment. Also, Cape Point Nature Reserve is just around the corner for a day full of beauty, either hiking or at the beach. With this out host Teserai was friendly and very helpful when we needed something. Willing to do laundry and organising a bigger braai grid for that fresh Snoek from Kalkbay. Thank you for a lovely time in the mountains."

"In one of Roger Whittaker's songs, you'll find the line "I've looked at life from both sides now....". We live in Strand, and after this weekend, Danie and I can say that we've looked at False Bay from both sides. You would think that, since we live at the seaside, the sea would be sort of old hat to us. The spectacular view from Cape Point Cottage removes any thought of old (or new) hats. Danie didn't know where we were going. Once we reached the cottage, he never stopped giggling. The combination of picture perfect setting, a very unique cottage....and even a full moon over the Bay on Saturday evening, made this an unforgettable weekend. The cottage itself is charming, very well equipped, very creatively thought out (we loved the sconces above the roll-top bath) and furnished. Ayanda, the perfect host, helped us to carry our stuff up to the cottage (and down again, when we departed). Wayde van Niekerk, you had better watch out... Ayanda is super fit and will give you a run for your money! When we visit again, I'll bring Luna a chewy bone to chase after. We'll also start working on our special project, dreamed up while we were enjoying some vino and snacks... behold, a zip-line or cable cart from Strand to Cape Point Cottage! Thanks for looking after this piece of paradise so well."

"Without a doubt my favourite cottage I've been to and I've been to a few. I arrived on one of the coldest and wettest days in Cape Town so having the fire place going when I arrived was amazing. The hospitality was amazing, as a female alone I was made to feel safe and I was helped with my bags without asking. The view is breathtaking and made sure to see it from every possible view point including the trail walks. It's the perfect getaway from hustle and bustle of life."

"Our time at the villa was magical. This has to be the best view in the Western Cape. The pictures do not do it justice - it is amazing! Tasirai was very helpful and always available to assist with anything. We will definitely be back."

"Nothing like a warm welcome on a cold winters evening! This little piece of paradise was exactly what we needed to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We shall surely be back again!"

"What an enchanting cottage...definitely the best of both worlds, with the forest behind you and the sea in front of you. There was an unlimited supply of firewood to keep the cottage warm and cosy. Light floods in from the many strategically placed windows to add to the ambiance of the place. The staff are friendly and helpful. A wonderful find. We will definitely be back."

"We had a lovely stay - the view of the sea from the master bedroom is wonderful! There is a big bath and a cosy fireplace. We went out on a rainy afternoon and came home to find a big fire already lit for us. The two dogs there are also the cutest ever."

"5 star service. This place is exactly what we needed for a secluded hide away. The staff offered exceptional service. We will definitely be returning soon."

"Lovely place in a lovely setting. Perfect getaway from the busy city life, really an awesome place."

"We absolutely loved the place! Love the fact that it is so "green" with its solar powered electricity and gas stove and geyser. It was cozy, fully equipped with everything we needed, loved the fireplace that kept us so warm we didn't even know half of Cape Town was freezing. Beautiful place, we cannot wait to go back."

"Stayed in the Villa this time around . Fantastic accommodation and stunning view."

"I had a wonderful time. I hope to return again soon."

"About three years ago a group of friends who entered middle age decided that for our birthdays we will spoil each other by whisking the birthday person away to an undisclosed venue for a weekend getaway within 100km (or so) from Cape Town. Since then we have made incredible memories as friends and found absolute gems to spend a weekend together. Last weekend we spent it at Cape Point Cottage and Villa. Running two holiday apartments ourselves we are always quite critical of the venues where we stay. Well, we may have met our match. Tarisai made us feel welcome from the minute we arrived, assisted with luggage, and introduced us to the property. His unobtrusive presence throughout the weekend was very comforting. He is an absolute asset to the venue. As a bit of a surprise to the two birthday celebrators we organised an interactive cooking experience in the villa on Saturday night. When I walked into the villa and saw the open plan kitchen my heart warmed and a big smile spread over my city-tired face. There was any serious cook's dream; a 5-burner gas hob with a large gas oven and a butcher's block to slice, dice, shred, cut, and prep a gourmet meal. The views of the ocean were unsurpassed, vying with the best in the world. From our tucked-away abode it was possible to explore Simon's Town and surrounds as far as Noordhoek. By Sunday at check-out time we all agreed, here we could have stayed at least another week. Highly recommended to any traveler in need of a city escape."

"Many thanks for providing a beautiful space for unwinding, and simply being. We had a wonderful time in the Stone Cottage. Tarasai was helpful in explaining how the solar and gas systems worked, and the kids loved having a bath and dinner by candlelight. Nothing can beat having a cup of coffee, surrounded by fog coming in off the sea, mixed with the most beautiful scents from the pelargonium lemon scented geraniums early in the morning. We enjoyed having a fire to warm us up at night, and star spotting. We will be back for sure."

"Was oor Desember vi twee weke daar. Fantasties. Die naaste aan die hemel."

"No venue will offer you the view that this venue offers. Just a couple of concerns that did not affect us but that could affect others: It's not accesible for any person with some kind of disability or an elderly person; both bedrooms in the Villa not accessible to elderly people or any person who has difficulty climbing stairs; no hairdryers can be used because of solar energy; no TV available; you need to purchase groceries before getting to Simons Town as local shops is very very expensive."

"Great Getaway."

"Great getaway, pleasantly surprised that one got and more what was advertised. Will definitely return."

"This is an absolute gem of a place and we were so sad to leave. I could not believe how well priced it was, considering the beautiful view and stunning interiors. My favorite part of staying here, was waking up in the morning and looking out of the bedroom window, which has an uninterrupted view of the mountain. A big thank you to Rosalind."

"Lovely setting."

"It was absolutely fantastic and memorable."

"We want to keep this place a secret! Its truly a gem. We travel a lot as a family and this is firmly our new favourite. The villa itself is uniquely different, extremely comfortable to live in, with spectacular ocean views and you feel like you are lost somewhere in nature. Can't stop missing this place already."

"Our time at the villa was magical. The best view ever! The villa is spacious and well equipped and we loved the two decks outside, one from the main bedroom and the other from the lower level. WiFi is working great. The kitchen is great. We loved every moment of our stay at the villa and would like to return soon. Peaceful and absolutely bliss."

"We had a wonderful three nights in the cottage. Peaceful setting, lovely views of the sea (we spotted dolphins and a humpback whale). Lovely cottage with great atmosphere. Tasirai was very helpful."

"It was spectacular, although we couldn't use the bath as the hot water only filled it to our ankles. Other than that it was everything it promised."

"Baie lekker plek met `n awesome view. Die huis/ villa het egter na rook geruik. Die beddegoed is baie oud en kan vwervang word. Van die venster en die skuifdeur se ruit is ook gebreuk. Alles was lekker maar die villa kort beslis maintenance."

"We loved our stay at this beautiful little cottage tucked away in the valley outside Simon's Town. The facilities were basic but more than sufficient, the bath was amazing and the view absolutely breathtaking. We would definitely suggest it to anybody looking for a relaxed getaway."

"Superb location, superb getaway."

"It was a lovely stay. Water a little cold but understandable."

"What a wonderful place! We will definitely be back."

"Cape Point Cottage is in a stunning setting and is certainly a nice way to get away from it all. Tarisai, the caretaker, was helpful and the cottage itself catered to most of our needs. The one disappointing thing was that the level of cleanliness wasn't quite what we'd want, particularly when using self-catering facilities. Most of the pots and crockery were a bit grubby as was the inside of the kitchen cupboard and fridge. The outside tables and braai also clearly hadn't been cleaned (there were cigarette butts in the latter). We also hadn't been warned that there would be dogs on the premises. They were well behaved around people but they did spend a lot of the night barking. We understand that this is actually to keep the local baboons away which makes sense but a warning would have been nice."

"Thanks for the most wonderful stay there. Nothing except Heaven can beat this."

"With the sea lapping at the feet of your mountain wooden cottage, breathtaking sea view, and surrounded by a lush garden; this place is surely magical! Solar powered and candle light, nothing gets more romantic than this! Comfortable and friendly staff makes your stay a pleasure. We will recommend this to all nature lovers, tired, overworked and even for the spiritual traveler; this is the place to unwind, recharge and truly take in the beauty of our Cape Peninsula!"

"Most beautiful location, wonderful peace and tranquility. Absolutely gorgeous."

"Just got back from a few days at the Villa. We were very happy with everything. In fact, we should have stayed longer. Spectacular views and two lovely, well trained dogs to keep us company. We will be back."

"The initial impression was of a cheerful and characterful house (the Villa), but it rained heavily that night and there were several leaks. We tried to make a fire but the house filled with smoke, and the solar/gas geyser failed on the second night, leaving us having to heat large pots of water on the gas stove for washing etc. We could not find the caretaker anywhere to help us out and were only able to report this to him the next morning, at which point he seemed to fix the hot water problem. The owner was very kind and did not charge us for the second night when I emailed her about these issues, but overall this was a somewhat disappointing stay. We missed having any curtains/blinds in the main bedroom to give us some privacy and block the early morning light. The place could also have been cleaner, and loose solar/electrical wires screened off."

"We enjoyed our stay very much. I especially like the fact that you don't need to get out of bed to see the beautiful sunrises!"

"A wonderful place to be. I will definitely stay there again!"

"As soon as you arrive, you know you're never going to want to leave. As long as you have all your groceries, you don't need to... Hiking paths up the back of the mountain, beach down below, views for days. It's just the most magical place."

"We stayed in the Cottage and in the villa and enjoyed both the warmth and coziness of the cottage and the openness and incredible views from the house. The location of the venue, the mountain above and ocean below are among the finest places we have stayed in all our worldwide travels. The staff were very helpful, and we will definitely be back again. Felt like a real getaway."

"Beautiful setting and view."

"We had an amazing stay in the villa. What a stunning setting. I can highly recommend it."

"Absolutely beautiful setting, enjoyed the peacefulness and tranquility. Very comfortable and excellent service. A little piece of heaven."

"The best weekend ever! It was like a second honeymoon. Will definitely go there again."

"We had some friends out from the UK and wanted to show them the splendor of Cape Town and I don't think there is a better spot in and around Cape Town to do so than this spot (we stayed in the house). With it being winter we spent a good amount of time in front of the fireplace sipping at local reds and had coffee in the morning, watching the most glorious sunrises over False Bay. This place is a definite must for all fellow travelers and the proximity to Cape Town makes it an ideal breakaway spot for locals."

"Might just be good to point out to guests in advance that there are two venues on the site (the villa and the cottage) and to inform guests in advance exactly what they're booking for. (Not clear from the Budget website photos). We thought we were booking for the villa and ended up in the cottage. Still enjoyed our stay thoroughly though, beautiful setting and the cottage was lovely."

"This was a fantastic mid-week escape from the city we would have loved to have stayed for much longer than three days. We loved waking up to picturesque sunrises over False Bay. The environmentally conscious will be very impressed that the accommodation is completely "off the grid" - using solar power and a gas stove and the water comes from a natural spring. The people who live on the property are making a huge effort to protect the rare natural Fynbos of the area by clearing non-indigenous plants. This really is the place to go to unwind and relax in a beautiful setting. Comfortable accommodation, friendly staff and great value for money and only 45 minutes drive from Cape Town. We will be back soon."

"Great location and setup, ideal for an easy city getaway."

"What an incredibly comfortable cottage in a beautiful setting. The cottage has everything you need for a break out of the city, fireplace, comfy couch, well stocked kitchen, etc. Even resident border collies and cats if you need the company. I only had the chance to stay one night but will certainly be back for more. So close to the city but you really feel like you're away. The kind of gem you wish you could keep to yourself!"

"The cottage is charming and absolutely gorgeous. We had the most amazing stay there! It was so relaxing and the view is incredible. It provides everything you need and is an ideal setting for a romantic breakaway. In short, everything was perfect and I hope we will be able to return sometime in the future!"

"My boyfriend and I went for a little getaway for a weekend... we had planned to visit the peninsula and go to Simon's town for lunch etc, but the setting of Cape Point Cottage was so lovely, we couldn't bear to tear ourselves away. The cottage it very comfy with everything you could need, we enjoyed hiking above the cottage in the mountains, chilling by the splash pool and chatting to Rosalind about her Gum-Tree adventures. A quick drive from home, but it feels like a true holiday and rest."

"The most breathtaking views on the Peninsula, a Stone Cottage tucked into the mountain and only an hour from the city centre."
