Budget Getaways Review

What we have here are two adjoining farms of 130ha each, both sitting high up in the Groot Winterhoek Mountain Conservancy, and each with an old farmhouse tailored to the ideal group getaway.

First off is Coen's House, a four-bedroom (two of them ensuite) clay and stone house, combining the trappings of a well-equipped farm dwelling with amazing views and total privacy. In fact, the wild mountain setting, its rock features and abundance of crystal water were the prime motivators behind old man Coen's decision to build the house - this takes us back to 1935.

About 80 years down the line, the house features an open-plan kitchen and living area, with a stone fireplace at the centre and 24/7 internet access. The living area opens to a covered porch with built-in braai.

Heading about 3km up the dirt road brings us to Daantjies House. This time your weekend comes in the form of a cavernous abode filled with family tradition. Situated on the banks of the farm dam, you'll be gazing over fields dotted with resident antelope.

Like Coen's, Daantjies is fully equipped, with linen and towels provided. Sleeping a total of 8, the home has four bedrooms, in the form of two doubles, and two twins. All have ensuite bathrooms (three showers and one bath).

As with Coen's and the wider Groot Winterhoek area, your activity menu features swimming, rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, small game viewing and paragliding.

Deciding between the two houses? Tough call. For a bigger group, Daantjies is the way to go. While Coen's may be slightly more compact, with only two ensuites, the price tag is a little lower. And, if you're keen to bring the family hound along, both are brilliant options.

Guest Reviews

"This place is homely and beautiful. Our dogs had never been so happy."

"We are regulars at Coens and Daantjies and love it. Rustic and very private make it really feel like you are getting out of the city. Beautiful walks down to the river during the day followed by a relaxing braai under the stars make the perfect weekend getaway. And of course, being able to bring the family dog completes the weekend for us."

"Lovely spot to get away for the weekend. Quite, peaceful and in a beautiful location. House well equipped and pretty comfortable."

"Wanting to go back to the Cedar Mountains where we spent our last holiday, we tried to book the Rooibos house at Cedar Peak again, unbeknownst to me it was a colleague of mine (working for a small company of 9 people) who was the culprit who had it booked over the time we had hoped to go! I hadn't even told my colleague about the place, I recognized the view from that cottage on his whatsapp profile! What are the odds? Anyway, we had fallen in love with everything about the Cedar Mountains, so we were thankful that we managed to book Daantjies house on the farm next to Cedar Peak. What a lovely find! I would go back in a heartbeat! Time spent on a lilo on the private container-fed dam was what made it for me, the water was crystal clear and perfect temperature! The rest of the time was spent eating until we were sleepy and sleeping until we were hungry, most of which took place on the stoep! Two beautiful horses came for a drink everyday (which made taking pretty pictures oh so easy, along with the picturesque scenery). We happily fed them most of our fruit supply of the week! We had perfect weather whereas it rained just about everywhere else over December. Also, we had absolutely no problems with baboons, so no worries there. Well equipped kitchen too! I think what I love most about the place is that you feel so secluded, so safe, and that our privacy was so important to the owners. We didn't encounter a soul while there and that is what we were after, a real getaway."

"Excellent as always!"

"It was an amazing week spent with amazing people in an amazing place. Such great hospitality from Carin and Peter. We will definitely go back."

"Unbelievable setting with stunning views! We loved the fireplace, hot water bottles and that it is pet-friendly. The hounds had a good time exploring every nook and cranny around the property, and we enjoyed the prolific bird life. This is a real home away from home."

"Even though we booked for Daantjies, but arriving in the dark, accidentally rocked up at Coen's, our host's were very accommodating and we ended up having a magical weekend at Coen's house. The terrain of the surrounding area is honestly quite epic to say the least, we all wished we could've stayed longer to explore the rocky landscapes and enjoy the views. The house fully equipped with the basics and quite quirky and homely. You will find bent spoons for hooks and a hearty fireplace that gobbles wood, it was the heart of Winter in its defense. So bring extra! we had 12 bags in total and still wanted more. I would definitely go again, and perhaps actually stay at Daantjies this time. Highly recommended."

"Sometimes we forget what silence is like, what the Milky Way looks like, what fresh air smells like. Then we visit Coen's House and our souls sing with reconnection to it. Our dog bounds in and out of the rocks. Our kids go a bit feral. That is why we keep returning to Coen's House."

"8 of us spend the weekend at Daantjies House. Its a quirky cottage with everything that you would need and more. Views to die for and a perfect place for family and friends to spend some time with each other. The bonus is that it has four bedrooms all with en-suite. We loved that. Even though it rained most of our weekend and was very cold,we still really enjoyed ourselves and the dogs was definitely in heaven. The fireplace worked over time but just make sure you bring some extra wood along in winter. Its a long way back to town and believe we you would not want to leave."

"We had an absolutely stunning weekend. What a lovely valley to be in. We were visited by two very inquisitive horses and a troupe of baboons passing by. I can recommend it for a laid back group visit. There was very little water in the dam but as it was too cold to swim, it was no problem."

"Very comfortable pet-friendly accommodation at Daantjies in a beautiful setting, and great value for money. Its an absolute bonus to find a place with all rooms en suite. The resident horses were delightful, and participated in most patio activities. We would have loved more information on the surrounding area, permissible walks, and property boundaries."

"We really enjoyed our stay at Daantjies House. My husband and I went for 6 nights and were joined by our young adult children for the four nights over Easter. We drove the short distance to the Groot Winterhoek Nature Reserve and hiked to a lovely mountain pool (took about three hours to get there), we swam in the dam right in front of our house, were greeted by the horses every morning when they came for a drink at the dam, had lovely leisurely breakfasts and braais. We enjoyed the space and the four bathrooms a lot. Daantjies has a wonderful ambiance, this is no ordinary self-catering cottage, but a much-loved family home, with all sorts of artistic touches, original paintings by the owner, patchwork quilts, interesting and unusual pieces of furniture and crockery. The house is very well-equipped. I highly recommend for a relaxing time away in the mountains."

"What a wonderful and cosy cottage, it feels like a home from home! We had an absolute ball swimming in the dam all weekend and being dog friendly is a huge plus. We can't wait to return. Carin thank you for such wonderful hospitality and organisation."

"We spent a lovely long weekend at Daantjies House, what a gem of a place! The peace and tranquility is second to none and on a hot day, the crystal clear dam right in front of the house was an absolute blessing. Views that photographs just cannot do justice, and the night sky's are breathtaking. The local 'neighbours', two extremely friendly chestnut horses, Grey Rhebok, lots of birds and baboons, all helped to make our weekend an amazing experience (and don't worry about the baboons, they don't come down to the house while you are around, but keep an eye open if you go for walks, especially with dogs). As for our dogs, I think they had a better time than us (if at all possible). Will definitely go back!"

"We had a wonderful long weekend away at Daantjies House over New year. It truly was a magical time. The house is great with four ensuite bedrooms and is great for a bunch of friends. The beds were super comfy and the house is basic but nicely decorated. The house is also secluded, offering privacy but beautiful views, looking out over a dam and the mountainside. The water in the dam is lovely and we spent many hours floating around in the warm water. The fynbos was in full bloom with lovely pink Ericas. And lastly, the two lovely horses who came to visit every day was a real treat. We will definitely be back to visit again."

"Lovely, quiet, restful place, and dog-friendly too."

"A week at Daantjies was the ultimate getaway experience for our family of four adults and one crazy hound. Each of us found our bit of heaven through photography, hiking, running or just reading a good book. The house has a few quirks (like the missing door on the shower) and we had to keep checking the dog for ticks, but the benefits far outweigh the negatives. Daantjies is a very homely and comfortable house and the wood-fired stove kept the house warm despite some rain and blustery wind. All in all, it was a wonderful holiday. Thank you Carin for making it possible."

"Thoroughly enjoyed the rustic and super comfortable getaway with the family. Would recommend it to any outdoors loving family or couple who need a break and chance to unwind. Definitely returning there."

"Despite the rocky ride for the last part of the road, our visit to Daantjie's place was every bit as lovely as we had hoped. The tranquil setting, the beautiful scenery and the well- equipped accommodation will ensure we come back for more! Our doggies just loved to swim in the dam and my daughter was in horse-heaven, having enjoyed the affections and interaction with the two local horse visitors. I just wished we could stay a bit longer."

"We had a wonderful stay at Coen's place and would love to visit again! The home was cozy and rustic with every imaginable amenity supplied. I loved the homely feel with the eclectic cottage furniture, the handmade quilts and the pottery crockery. This was the first time our dogs went away with us, which was wonderful. They are used to an enclosed garden and thoroughly enjoyed the freedom of racing up and down to the dam and the fresh mountain air and hikes awoke their inner wolf! Truly a magical retreat up in the majestic mountains. Thanks Peter and Carin-we hope to return in the near future."

"Lovely place, lots of space, very quiet and beautiful. The dogs had a great time too."

"If sneaking off to a remote location with your "lovie" or your pets, or taking the family to a super exquisite weekend away spot, this place fills the blanks perfectly. The "private" dam to cool off from the summer sun, well more like lilo fights, the awesome sunrise over the mountains, the rock climbing and bouldering with the kids are perfect ways to while away the hours. Afternoon snoozes in the cool house and reading on the veranda early evening. Coens is a great getaway three days felt like a week of holidays. Will go again and keep telling others."

"Super fantastic venue/setting. Rustic farmhouse with all the utensils that you could possibly require. Dogs loved the venue."

"Really peaceful with unbelievable rock formations and great views."

"We wanted to "get away" from everything, and we certainly did, it was quiet, peaceful and beautiful. The kids explored every rock and boulder they could get to, and tore most of their pants sliding down some of the rocks, haha! They were running around with our puppies in tow, and the pups swam in the dam every chance they got. The freedom we all felt was shown in the kids and dogs, and how happy they were, just roaming free. We had no noisy neighbours or traffic noise or loud music, ahhh bliss. The house itself had everything you could need. We even got a visit from the two resident goats, and we visited the stunning horses in the paddock just up the road from the house and they were very friendly, but the dogs barked bravely at all the strange creatures they have never seen before! It ended up being the coldest weekend in the entire Cape, so we were very glad to have the fireplace in the lounge, and it burned most of the time. Of course the boys still insisted on braaing in the freezing cold. When we left, we even got a message from the owners thanking us for leaving the house so clean! Makes you wonder what other guests do. We will certainly visit Coen's House, or perhaps Daantjie's House, again!"

"Great setting for a relaxed weekend away. Incredible views, and all one needs in terms of budget accommodation in the mountains."

"What an absolutely wonderful experience it was staying at Coen's House. Enjoyed it tremendously, and found everything just great! Thank you for making the lovely house and location available to us city dwellers."

"I enjoyed my stay at Coen's House. It offered a relaxing break from the noises of the city with beautiful view across the Cederberg mountains. With plenty of firewood provided I was able to enjoy a toasty fire throughout the night. Just keep an eye out for the baboons and must sure you lock-up when going for a walk. I do recommend this house if you are looking for a relaxing break."

"What an amazing getaway. I feel 10 years younger, within just 3 days. We had the privilege of meeting Daantjie, the person after which the house is named, and what a pleasant man. Our dogs loved it! My kids were missing in action the entire weekend and ouma and oupa are totally in love with this gem. We will definitely go back again. For the rest, I confirm what Joanne Frost said in her earlier review: "We just got back last night - absolutely stunning." Loved every single second of our weekend. Thank you to the Donnington's for creating such a wonderful place and opening their farm up to us. My Golden Retriever absolutely loved himself too but be warned, there are a lot of buck and it is not suitable for dogs that will chase. Also you need to be a horse lover."

"Coens house is a total gem! Wow from the spectacular views from the stoep, to the beautiful private dam. The days were warm and crisp and the nights spent by the very warm fire. Kids, dog and parents had a blast. We cannot wait to go back in the summer. Coens is the perfect getaway from the city."

"A tranquil getaway close enough to town to be convenient, far enough to be remote."

"Our stay at Coen's House was stunning! The house is so charming and the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. It's the perfect mix of "rustic" and "comfort", with complete privacy. There was plenty of fire wood to keep us warm during our stay, and we enjoyed the peace and quite tremendously. If getting "up close and personal" with nature, scenic walks, stargazing and relaxation appeals, then Coen's House is a definite winner! We were so sad to leave, and can't wait to go back."

"What an amazing home. Beautiful setting for a total getaway."

"Kids loved it, dogs had a ball running around. The little dam is crystal clear and warmer than expected. The kids could wander around safely and always know where we were. A very easy, relaxed weekend away. Thank you."

"This has to be the best spot in the area. This is the best of the best in terms of views, nature sounds, silence, smells. Stunning photo opportunities exist. Our two daschunds were out most of the time exploring in the rocks and caves. At night they were lying in front of the fireplace, dead tired. Lots of places to go exploring and heaven for kids. Stargazing as good as you can get within two hours from Cape Town. We will definitely be back. Bring warm clothes, your binoculars, some good red wine, a camera and a pack of playing cards. A good time is guaranteed."

"There was no better place for four weary city slickers to take a break, relax, breathe in clean country air and enjoy the most extraordinary landscape surrounding Coen's House. Every need was catered for, staff were friendly and helpful, yet unobtrusive, and Peter was a most accommodating host. This was our first visit, but will definitely not be our last."

"Definitely one of the best getaways we've been to. We went as a group of two families and Coen's House is ideal for that - four bedrooms and two bathrooms meant that each family had ample space and privacy. The decor is rustic but charming, the setting is isolated and beautiful and the host, Peter, is fantastic - nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely be back."
