Budget Getaways Review

Peel away the somewhat drab outer layer, Velddrif is at core still a good ol' Weskus fishing village, where fish and chips drowning in All Gold, salty sea breezes and sun-beaten fishermen are the order of the day.

Following the Berg River out of town brings you to Kingfisher Heads and its setting rich in birdlife and gentle lagoon views.

Let’s cut right to the chase here: Kingfisher Heads is a self-catering apartment, with similar apartments on either side. As such it comes with size and privacy limitations - if that's what you are looking for.

What Kingfisher does offer is relaxed ground-floor apartment living right on the river bank, along Velddrif's historic Bokkom Laan.

The general layout includes a living room with dining table and open-plan kitchen, flanked by two double bedrooms, each with a small ensuite bathroom and shower. The decor is simple and functional, but includes everything you need.

Linen and towels are provided and mod-cons come in the form of telly (SABC only) and a DVD player.

The immediate area has plenty to keep you busy, with the unique Berg River and its amazing birdlife, photographic, canoeing and fishing opportunities forming the focus.

Popular Bokkom Laan offers traditional West Coast cooking, as well as fishing and boat trips, while further along the beach is safe for swimming - assuming you survive the ball-crushing water temp. Further afield, you’ve got Paternoster, Langebaan and Clanwilliam for potential day-tripping.

The guest feedback at Kingfisher looks pretty decent: “The setting is perfect to view the Berg River and the birdlife,” says one. “Lovely quiet stay at Kingfisher Heads on the edge of the lagoon in Velddrif,” comments another.

Easy-going, uncomplicated, easy on the pocket, and just an hour or so from the Mother City.

Guest Reviews

"We had two units, no. 15 and no. 18. Number 18 was lovely, it was clean and very carefully designed with all kinds of clever things thought of, the linen was beautiful and the fittings were tasteful, all plug sockets were marked neatly, the light fittings all worked and the kitchen was modern, clean and efficient to work in. Number 15 does not compare at all, for the same price, it just does not add up, with no decent facilities, tiny microwave-type oven, mismatched utensils, peeling chip board and fake flowers. But generally a great stay, thank you."

"We hope to stay there again."
