Dairy farm outside Wilderness with a private timber cottage overlooking a dam

Budget Getaways Review

Up for a cosy log cabin in the Garden Route, miles away from the madding crowds?

Only 15km from Wilderness in the Hoekwil area, Westwood Cottage is located on a working dairy farm above the Wilderness Lakes - the perfect spot for either a bit of R&R or an action-packed break, depending on what floats your boat.

Sleeping six guests (two on a sleeper couch), this comfortable timber cottage is raised on stilts to maximize those open vistas and is circled by rolling green lawns leading down to a large dam.

It has two bedrooms, with Queen bed and two singles, and both with ensuite shower and bath. There’s a fully equipped, open-plan kitchen and spacious living area, both drenched in happy light.

There's no indoor fireplace (presumably due to the fire hazard), but there are gas heaters, so you will be well-covered during the nippy winters.

A large wooden deck leads off the living room and main bedroom, with breathtaking views unfurling over the dam and hazy Outeniqua mountains beyond.

A braai area, towels and linen are thrown into the deal, as is farm fresh milk on request - after that 2% stuff you've been drinking all this time your Corn Flakes won't know what hit them.

Tummy full, you have a number of options to fill the day. From chilling out on the deck with a pair of binocs and your copy of Roberts, to hitting the beach at Wilderness, fishing in the dam, riding your bike, exploring the local forests and mountains, there's way more than enough to do.

A hassle-free, human-free base to the Garden Route.

Guest Comments

"A lovely cottage with lovely views. Westwood is clean, well equipped, nicely decorated and has comfy beds. The cows, new calves and seeing a calf being born made our stay very interesting. At night there is an auditory splendour of owls. The hosts are very welcoming and ready to be of assistance." (Kim Murphy Bellairs, visited September 2014)
"What a wonderful few days among the cows! We would have stayed another week if time allowed." (Helen May, visited July 2014)
"What a stunning spot! Our family of four stayed here and enjoyed ourselves immensely. The house is clean, tastefully furnished, wonderfully equipped and the view is amazing. The kids enjoyed watching the milking in action and we were even lucky enough to see four calves being born, right from the patio. Our hosts were super friendly and we were spoilt with farm fresh milk too. We did have some adventures with the mud, making us wish we had packed our wellies, but it added to the fun and memory making." (Louise Gibbon, visited May 2014)
