Mtunzini Snapshot

Often referred by those in the know as one of the Zululand's best kept secrets, Mtunzini is a nature lover's coastal paradise. It gets its name from “place in the shade” - a historical reference to the spot under the milkwood trees where the white Zulu chief John Dunn would meet the tribal elders of the area.

Mtunzini is idyllic and unspoilt, and as such forms part of the Umlalazi Nature Reserve. With laid-back vibe and clean, safe surrounds, it makes for a superb family break within easy reach of Durbs.

Things To Do

  • There are a number of hiking trails in and around the Umlalazi Nature Reserve. Ranging from mild to intense, they provide an opportunity to make acquaintance with a variety of curious creatures - fiddler crabs, mudskippers, bushbuck and duiker among them.

  • The timber boardwalk through the swamp forest of Raphia Palm Forest is where you need to be to spot the lesser spotted rare Palmnut vulture. Standing in the heart of the cathedral-like palm grove is a memorable experience.

  • Visit the Mtunzini Country Club for a round of golf on their 71-par 9 hole golf course. If golf is not your cup of tea, you can try your hand at bowls.

  • Get your fill of water sports and sun on the beach. The lagoon and beach area is great for swimming, surfing, canoeing, water skiing or jet skiing.
