Rustenburg Snapshot
Sprawled at the foot of the Magaliesberg Mountains, under the blistering African sun, is Rustenburg - or, Town of Rest, which is somewhat of a misnomer. Once reknowned for its natural springs and wholesome environment, Rustenburg has become quite the opposite, thanks to the discovery of platinum in the area. Today, the town is little more than a service hub to the mining sector, and as such, pretty unappealing. Having said that, the town still acts as a handy pit-stop en route to some prestigious game reserves in the vicinity. With a number of farm stalls lining the dusty road and a great big shopping mall just off the main drag, development has it perks.
Things To Do
- Animal lovers will definitely enjoy getting up close and personal with some of the big cats at the Abaakwa Predator Park.
- To scratch your trail-hiking, mountain-biking itch, check out Kgaswane Nature Reserve. With a number of good routes, shaded picnic and braai spots, and clean ablutions, you can potentially make a day of it.
- If you're keen on experiencing the gorge from an elevated position, then Magaliesberg Canopy Tours should be on your list. Awesome views, a release of adrenaline, decent guides (or so we're told) this promises to be a worthwile activity.
- Visiting Sun City is pretty much a rite of passage in these parts. Yes, it may be a tad cheesy but imagine not paying a visit to the slot machines. Besides, even if resort-style living is not your scene, the kids will love it.
