Van Wyksdorp Snapshot

Van Wyksdorp has happily missed out on the last wave of city dwellers snapping up country properties. While it’s a little way off the R62 (40km on a gravel road to be exact) this minute village retains an uber relaxed vibe that's well worth accumulating extra dust on your tires. Backed by the gentle slopes of the Rooiberg to the north, and sweeping views to the Outeniqua’s in the south, Van Wyksdorp started out as a farm belonging to non other than a Van Wyk. Life for the village and surrounding farms peaked during the ostrich boom years - strolling the gravel streets one would never think there was once a school bursting at the seams with 200 kids. Today you'll find little more than a collection of historic houses, a windmill or two, a couple of shops, a restaurant and coffee shop and a few blue gum trees for shelter from the summer scorch. The surrounding area is a virgin playground for bikers and hikers, with gorgeous gravel routes over the Rooiberg to Calitzdorp, and Herbertsdale to the south.

Things To Do

  • Take a day trip over the Rooiberg South and Rooiberg North passes, for gobsmacking vistas over a vast mountain landscape.

  • Take a walk through quiet gravel streets to the historic NG and Lutheren churches.

  • Kick back on the stoep of The Barking Frog and watch the action over cappucino and cake.

  • Take to some of the hiking trails in the surrounding hills near the village.
