Budget Getaways Review

Flanking a quiet little street in the heart of Prince Albert lies Afdakkie, a cool and comfortable self-catering house with a corrugated “afdakkie” that provides welcome refuge from the blistering Karoo sun.

Afdakkie is one of the older buildings in Prince Albert and still boasts some of its original architectural features, such as the reed ceiling and solid Oregon pine doors. Afdakkie is rumored to have been a “nagmaalhuisie”, which literally means Holy Communion House. Farmers often stayed in these houses for a night when journeying into town to attend church.

The three bedrooms and two bathrooms provide plenty of space for six guests. The kitchen is generous and fully equipped, with the added bonus of basic supplies such as coffee, tea and fresh milk.

During your stay at Afdakkie you can look forward to cuddling up under cotton-clad feather duvets, enjoying a braai in the shade of the grapevine that drapes heavy over the courtyard, whipping up a tasty meal with your pick of fresh herbs from the herb garden, or simply watching the townspeople go about their daily business over your afternoon tea on the stoep.

Whether you are simply passing through or choosing to make a weekend of it (we suggest the latter), Afdakkie is your cozy home from home.

Guest Reviews

"We (3 motorbiking gents) stayed at Afdakkie for one night. We found it good value, well positioned in terms of restaurant and shops and equipped with everything you need for self-catering."

"This is a spacious facility, clean, very comfortable and located within walking distance from all the businesses. Great stay for only one night as well as for longer periods of time. We liked the attention to detail in the house as well. Highly recommended!"
