South Winds personifies "beachfront bungalow". In fact, if this stylish seaside cottage in Castle Rock Marine Reserve was any closer to False Bay's lapping waves, we would have to call it a house-boat.
The cottage, literally hanging over the large boulders that drop to the ocean below, occupies a prime location within the reserve, with gobsmacking views stretching from just about every corner.
Down to the details... Let's kick off with the living area - a spacious room on the lower level, sporting timber floors, light beach colours and plenty of glass to make the most of the vista.
Up a level lands you in the fully equipped kitchen and dining area, with wood-burning stove hogging main stage in winter. In the far corner we spot a DVD player and monitor to keep the kids happy at night.
Leading off from here is the covered deck where you’ll no doubt relish a sundowner too many - Cape Doctor willing, of course.
Sleeping-wise, the cottage accommodates six in three bedrooms: Queen, double and twin, plus double sleeper couch in the living room.
There's a central bathroom with shower as well as a newly added, fully enclosed open-air outdoor bathroom - way to go!
All linen and towels are provided.
Passing the time at South Winds is an easy and laid-back affair, as any seaside holiday should be. Chill out on the beach below the cottage; brave the water for a snorkel; visit the penguins at Boulders (a few minutes drive); dip into Simons Town's attractions, a mere five kays down the track, or head the other way and explore Cape Point.
Apart from a howling south-easter, there's little standing between you and a weekend in paradise. No wonder this spot was voted as one of the best beach getaways by House & Leisure!
