Fifteen kays from Robertson and tucked at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains on a 12ha tract of fertile farming land, Assegai Rest is a down-to-earth escape from your usual humdrum of city traffic and yapping neighbourhood pooches.
Circled by pretty surrounds (crammed with hiking potential), is a private farmhouse plus the separate Olea Cottage (click here) and a TiPi camp which you can read more about. (click here)
If R&R is what you're primarily here for, you can kick off your weekend with a therapeutic massage by hostess Jackie, while the kids baljaar with farm animals and dad tries his hand at archery. Robertson and its feel-good restaurants and wine farms are also all a mere hop up the road.
You're welcome to bring the family hound to Assegai - the garden is fenced, which allows you to explore without fear of Fido going on the rampage.
Let's take a look at the accommodation. Assegai House is typical of old farmhouses built in the last half-century or so: loads of space, basic amenities and laid-back atmosphere. It's the kind of pad where you won’t be overly anxious about the kids stomping through the kitchen with cowpat clinging to their gumboots.
Housing anything from a couple to a group of eight guests, it comes with two double rooms and a pair of twins, two bathrooms (one with shower, one with bath), plus outside shower built into a fig tree. Mooi.
The living room boasts a fireplace and the kitchen is fully equipped for a decent cook-up. Hubby can perform his Flip-the-Wors trick at the outside braai area (a crate of wood is provided free, with more available for purchase), while you down a well-earned chardonnay on the new viewing deck.
The outdoor delights don't end here. Apart from outdoor shower, there's a hammock and a hanging chair under the fig tree.
To top it all off, you've got use of a sparkling swimming pool situated mid-way between Lancewood Tipi Lodge and Assegai House - a welcome wallowing hole during the scorching summer.
This is an uber chill spot for families and groups.
