Budget Getaways Review
This excellent group getaway, comprising of two separate river camps. HutCAMP has mini reed-and-thatch huts and Campground is an open area for campers. Each has its own lapa / kitchen area. Situated along the Breede River between Bonnievale and Swellendam, the camps are booked exclusively.
The HutCAMP accommodates 12 adults with or without kids and the Campground allows 30 guests camping, children included. The cute huts are tiny hutches, just big enough for your bed and your toothbrush. Each hut with a double and two singles, own loo and small washbasin. Two tiny huts at the Campground under the tree, awaiting Oupa and Ouma if they join the group of campers.
A well appointed fireplace above the river forms the social hub of most evenings and early morning coffees. Each lapa has a huge indoor fireplace / braai. Wood and ice available on the farm. Best of all, there's a washing - up service available - needless to say, it's popular and a bargain at R250 per day or R500 for a weekend !
Turning to action, there's plenty to do at Breede Escape. For starters, there's a river lapping at your toes and two kayaks at each River Camp to enjoy it from, not to mention the fantastic birdlife. There's a volleyball court and trampoline, miles of dirt road for the MTB and running crowd as well as strolls up the farm koppie for fantastic Langeberg views.
For the hikers and walkers, there's the Toktokkie hiking trail, a 5km circular stroll which takes you from the camps through farmland and up a nearby koppie with views out over the entire area - a great spot for sundowners!
If you can't bear to miss your favourite TV show, you can book the DSTV in the lapa area by prior arrangement.
And finally (whew !), there's the appeal of chilling out with the friendly and curious Jersey cows, while they make short work of their hearty meal of lucerne, grazing day and night on the green fields ! Yes you can bring your dog friend with, but please keep them leashed close to the cows. Your furry friend will enjoy the farm life and the swims in the river. All said and done, Breede Escape is organised and good value, the setting beautiful and private, the owners friendly, and the general experience unique.

"Perfect place at Breede Escape Hut Camp on a riverbank with private huts, beautifully furnished facilities, camping areas, superb- hiking areas, and wonderful views – a perfect haven to suit all, and skillfully managed by our Landlady, Christa. Our programme included hiking trails, winery visits, exploration of the area, fun games, and superb facilities for both hikers, non-hikers, and their most welcome pet dogs. Braais, swimming, kayaking, fishing, River Cruise (Viljoensdrift), darts and bowls competitions - all contributing to a beautiful, perfect retreat with excellent camaraderie and fellowship - embracing our Rotary ideals of friendship, fellowship, camaraderie, support and goodwill."

"Absolutely stunning spot for a chilled group getaway. I have stayed previously in camp 2 with its spacious lounge area but camp 1 definitely suited us better this time with the long table in the shade and double beds for the couples. Generous wood and ice supplies provided. We all came back relaxed but a bit stiff from all the swimming, paddling, running and jumping - even fitted in a yoga session on the grass in the shade. So perfect break with fun activities to burn off some of the calories we consumed in our family feasts. Thank you so much for your awesome hospitality."

"Wat n ongelooflike venue. Klein stukkie hemel op aarde. Natuurliefhebbers se droom. Tussen die bosse, regs langs die rivier, alles is netjies en presies wat mens nodig het vir n amasing break away to revitalize en te ontspan. Dankie Christa vir n onvergeetlike naweek weg. Sal verseker gou weer kom kuier."

"We stayed in Camp 2 and it had everything and more that we needed. The huts are comfortable and cosy and the hospitality from the host, fantastic. Great location and more equipped than you probably think. Will definitely be visiting again."

"Our stay was absolutely amazing and Christa is the best host ever. Would recommend Breede Escape to everyone!"

"So the trip to Breede Escape took place in the last week of June for 4 nights. Christa & Herkie are super accommodating hosts and their staff members are just as friendly and helpful! The facilities are well equipped and you'll have everything you need (obviously take note of the tips given on their website so that you plan accordingly). We brought all our own food (there was ample space in the fridges and freezers) and cooked our meals in the indoor fire-place. The rooms were cozy and bathrooms were very clean, we were fortunate to have a toilet in each room. We were a bit worried about coming in Winter so we went a bit crazy with extra blankets, but we were warm at all times. Waking up to the view in the morning is phenomenal. We had a small issue with the geyser but Christa & Herkie responded to us almost instantly and sorted everything out, so we weren't inconvenienced at all :)... OH! And if you have someone who's directionally-challenged driving you there, trust Google maps... My dad got lost for hours even though the directions were pretty clear."

"Super setting; the accommodation was rustic but perfect. We had a most enjoyable family weekend. It's a great venue for large groups as you are private and away from the other campers. We will most definitely go back again!"

"Dit was nou wel winter maar ons het ongelooflik lekker gekuier! Die konsep en uitleg is perfek."

"This was a perfect place to bring my family and friends together for my birthday party. This place is truly amazing! There were so many personal touches which we loved, from the welcome board with my name on, to the loads of firewood, to the hand soap, to the buckets full of toilet paper. The kids loved the outdoors, spent most of the time running around, and jumping on the trampoline. After staying a weekend, my soul felt rested. Thank you, Christa, for your kindness and making our visit so enjoyable. We'll definitely be back."

"We loved it hear and would definitely return."
(visited April 2015)
"We stayed at Breede Escape's larger camp with 5 other families. It was a perfect 'camping-without-the-hassle' getaway. The lapa/kitchen was really well equipped for such a large group. The optional extra of getting the dishes washed up was a complete bonus. The kids had a blast with the two kayaks (although with such a big group it helped that we took an extra two along). It was a wonderful weekend away and I would strongly recommend Breede Escape for a big group getaway."
(visited January 2015)
"A great place to get away for the weekend with a bunch of mates. The camps are private with big boma and braai area with views of the river. Canoes and volley ball court for those not just content to lie around and read/chat/drink. The kitchen is fully equipped for big parties and big thumbs up on the bar area and all the freezer space for ice cold drinks! Christa and the family are extremely accommodating and from personal experience I can attest to the lengths that they will go to return valuable items left behind. I am hoping to return to thank them properly sometime soon!"

"Words cannot express how we all feel about the place, from the day that we arrived everybody could not stop thanking me, for a fantastic place that I booked. Christa, thank you so much for all your patience and understanding, we all truly appreciate it. You will definitely be seeing us soon in the future, no doubt. The Venue setting, the huts, the lapa area, the outside fireplace at the river, the canoes the kids enjoyed throughly, the sand volleyball, all of these things makes this place, unique from all others."
(visited April 2010)
"Truly an amazing place! On the dam, tarzan swing, canoes and beautiful scenery! A wonderful place to have a braai with a group of friends and be content... The best place I have come across for a big group!"
(visited February 2006)
"Wow!!! The best weekend ever!! Two year old Jovan is still talking about his horse and goats. It is paradise for kids and adults alike, enough to do and wonderfull peace and tranquility. Christa and Herkie are very professional, friendly and helpfull without making you feel uncomfortable-you really feel like they are family Thanks again!"

"We went with friends and had an absolutely wonderful time. Bush Camp 2 is very spacious. I was a bit scared at night because of spiders but eventually after spraying a bit of Doom in our chalet , I fell asleep and slept well. The children had a ball, especially with the canoes. We relaxed so much, we did not want to go home."
