Budget Getaways Review
The setting of this farm-cum-reserve is stunning: a folded green valley below the towering Langeberg, segmented into multiple mini-valleys, each concealing further nooks and crannies crammed with trees, Cape fynbos, streams, dams, animal- and birdlife.
There is little to beat the convenience of Pat Busch and the immediacy and scope of the attractions, which include several walking trails, good birdwatching, fishing for bass, swimming and paddling in the farm dam, vineyards, massages.
Back at the ranch, the guest accommodation consists of an old farmhouse, known as Erika which can accommodate up to 25. Several simple open-plan cottages sleeping 2-4, and two luxury cottages ideal for couples. All offer plenty in the way of comfort and a close connection to nature. Choosing your bed for the weekend is mostly a matter of personal preference, all units having been fitted with fireplaces, outdoor braais and aircon (luxury cottages) or fans.
For a group of friends or family who would like to be under one roof, the Erika Farmhouse is obviously a better call due to its size and privacy, while the huddle of cottages, all functional farm buildings, are more suited to couples (travelling with or without mom-in-law). Of these, the freestanding Oak Cottage is the most private.
Need more luxury in your life? Nightjar and Hadeda Cottage are the way to go. With sweeping views of the mountains and vineyards, and lying side by side in separate gardens these new cottages have French doors and windows, terracotta-tiled living areas, reeded ceilings, aircon, indoor and outdoor showers, hammocks and spa baths. Quality percale linen (Feather duvets in winter), bath salts, coffee, tea, wood, hair dryers and everything else you can imagine, are all part of the deal. Both sleep four in two double beds.
It gets even better though...recently added is the sparkling nine meter swimming pool, fringed by rolling green lawn with gorgeous views over the Langeberg, a welcomed addition at which to chill in the summer blaze.
At the end of the day, whichever option you decide on, the majority of nature-loving guests leave Pat Busch with a smile on the dial. Chances are, you’ll drive off feeling the same way.
"A beautiful setting not too far out of Cape Town with oodles to do and see. Gorgeous self contained cottages set in a beautiful valley with mountains all around you. A hike, small walk to the dam, mountain biking trails, swimming pool, endless family fun! A great visit, a regular spot for us when heading out the city for a few days. High recommended."

"Loved the place! Great little get away and the cottages. The Hadida birds were very welcoming. Amazing outdoor shower, views of the mountains and some nice fun fishing too. Would definitely recommend it."

"We stayed in the Hadeda cottage, which is luxuriously equipped, and looks out over a beautiful valley and mountains. It's quiet and peaceful, and I highly recommend it."

"Staying at Pat Busch was good, but I miss the enthusiasm other reviews show. The house was neat and complete, the hills at your doorstep. Maybe it's the interior that says 'easy to clean' and not 'cosy'. Or the fact that you stay in a little park with more houses and neighbours side by side. I like a house alone in the field more, I guess. Your check-in is at a dedicated office, not with the owners. All in all, it was the (larger) scale of the business that influenced our appreciation."

"Thank you for the feedback and for the wonderful photo you emailed to us of the Fallow deer roaming outside your cottage at first light. They are usually most shy! We offer two ranges of accommodation - standard and exclusive units. The standard units are by design comfortable yet down-to-earth allowing those on a budget to enjoy the nature reserve and spoils of the Robertson Wine Valley. The exclusives offer all the extra creature comforts such as spa baths, air-conditioning, outdoor hammocks, down-duvets for winter and basics like coffee & tea are taken care of. We welcome you to visit again in the near future and try Nightjar & Hadeda - these might be more to your taste."

"The warmest guests you will ever meet with a great boutique wine cellar just down the road. Your stay wouldn't be complete without a walk in the reserve. Truly a world in a valley."

"The perfect place to get away from everything. We loved the peace and quiet. With so much beauty around you, it's like you are experiencing heaven on earth! Just a pity our stay was so short! Will definitely recommend this piece of heaven to all my friends!"

"Our rating is strongly based on the Hadeda Cottage, one of the two exclusive cottages, the other being Nightjar. The layout of the latter is much better, and would get much higher ratings from us. Unfortunately, although Hadeda is more private and secluded, it isn't what you want from that environment and my guess is that 9 out of 10 people would choose Nightjar. There are better value offerings out there. Some suggestions to the owners include a proper coffee table or larger table, as well as sharp kitchen knives. The wood given was a great bonus, thank you."

"Dear Mark, - It was good meeting you and apologies for the mix-up regarding your booking, I hope you enjoyed the complimentary bottle of our flagship red wine we left in the cottage? Thank you very much for your constructive feedback, we do take our guest comments very seriously since our accommodation has been running for over 25 years now and most of it is built on word-of-mouth business. So listening to our guests is very important to us especially since we have a large number or repeat customers. With regards to your comments, I do agree that the knives were blunt and my apologies for this. This is a pet personal irritation of my own when I go on holiday, that nobody has proper or sharp knives in their guest kitchens (I love cooking so all our kitchens have stainless steel pots & pans with proper chefs knives). All I can say is that when I confronted my staff on why the knives were blunt after I supplied them with a new knife sharpener not a month ago, they apologised and said they hadn't had a chance to sharpen the knives yet (!). The knives were sharpened the same day I received your feedback. As for the size of the table we specifically chose smaller tables so that cottage space isn't too cramped since these are the original farm cottages and we had to work with the space we had. That said, we are working on upgrading all the furniture in the near future. As mentioned before, my wife & I love travelling and staying at other accommodation venues - unfortunately however we always tend to cut our holidays a few days short because we can never find a venue that offers what we have for a similar price. I would be very interested to know and visit the better value offerings you mentioned. We are due for a holiday in June and are currently looking for places to stay so please advise as I am honestly interested in this. Recently everyone with a spare room offers accommodation and we are more often disappointed than delighted. (Although we have a short list of our own secret getaways ;)
Thanks and perhaps we'll see you again soon, this time in our Nightjar Cottage which I recommend for winter since it is more sunny & open, but Hadeda is better for summer since it has more trees & shade. Stephan"

"Mmm, a beautiful, peaceful and well relaxed weekend! This is the place to be if you want to get away from the city. No noises at all, imagine waking up to the birds in the morning and enjoying some of the best wine from this part of the country in front of the fireplace with friends. No cellphone reception but at a place like this one needs no interruption. Many thanks to the Bush family for assisting us in short notice. Will definitely become a regular and come back with more friends."

"Been visiting Pat Busch for almost 10 years! Been back time and again. Everytime better than before. The friendliness, warmth, views, surroundings, the endless things to do. Don't miss a tour of the winery or a chance to taste and buy wine, the wines are excellent! Thanks to the Busch's our family has many great memories spent in this beautifull part of our country."

"A lovely getaway, so peaceful and without any city noises (not even a TV)! Loved it!"

"Hmmm... Peach cottage is a bachelor flat more likely, so make friends quickly with your neighbours at Quince... We ended up bringing our embers over and braaing together, plus all the bottles we bought a Rusticus never left the valley :) ... that way we also numbed ourselves against Terence's noisy B.D. party that weekend. The hikes are awesome, including the bum sliding down the steep parts and getting lost in the overgrown berry bushes... Finally I could make use of my GPS - Thanks PAT! Oh, don't forget to treat yourselves to a really affordable and very professional massage before you leave... We'll be back - even just for Mimi and some more Pino."
