Budget Getaways Review
Named after a labourer who arrived out of the blue and became a local legend, Jan Hoppie is a simple farm cottage appointed above vineyards and oozing local character.
Getting to the cottage is via an ensemble of implements and worksheds, all needed to keep this wine, dairy and citrus farm alive and kicking.
The initial impression of a hard-working farm dissolves as one enters to the sweet scent of reed ceilings, old wood furniture and lingering smoke from yesterday’s open-hearth fire.
The cottage retains its humble beginnings and it could be this simple charm that explains the many return visits.
Jan Hoppie can sleep four guests, two of these in a separate bedroom with double bed, good quality linen, firm mattress (an essential on any Budget getaway!), and a humble farmstyle bench with telly on top.
Set to the side of the pleasant beskuit-en-koffie stoep and its picturesque views of valley, river (about 950m away), and distant mountains, is a double ensuite bedroom with own entrance. A useful bolthole to banish them surly teenagers/in-laws who've been dragged along for the ride.
And then, for further overflow, there are two single beds in the open-plan living room, which convert to couches by day.
The cottage is peppered with interesting rural artefacts - an original cobbler’s table for the braai goodies, old paraffin lamps, farm tools, Victorian taps and bath, a stable door serving as front door. There's also evidence of the modern in the form of DSTV and air-con, making this an all-seasons destination.
Besides linen and towels, hosts Janie and Thuys throw in free wood, candles and blitz to the deal. For those who just want to wake up and have it all done for them, you can always request the optional breakfast basket.
The verdict: Unpretentious little spot with a hefty dose of the traditional.
"Stunning little place. Lovely view and perfect for summer and winter. It is a must! Close to Kampala Farm where Schalk Shepard is hosting shows, so can make really a very good weekend of it. A must do."
