Budget Getaways Review
Well, what do you know! A Western Cape municipal resort Captain Getaway would actually recommend. Bisected by a gurgling stream, towering oak and poplar trees, this understated Grading Council-rated resort dozes in a picturesque valley among the Swartberg foothills.
Hugging the slopes above the resort is a neat row of six Swiss-style timber chalets. For an extended stay in the Swartberg mountains away from all things ostrich, these chalets are our recommended option.
They are spaced adequately apart (about 20m), the interiors are well maintained and the fittings more than decent. Cane furniture, a spacious open-plan kitchen and living area, clean wood-panelled bathroom, microwave, separate stove and oven, new-looking fridge, overhead fans, Jetmaster fireplace, oil heaters, TV and firm mattresses, are among the pleasant touches. Even the master bedroom has a view from the double bed – very atypical of a municipal facility.
A wide deck with braai area yields further views – a good spot to watch your friends piling into the cheaper units below.
Although clean and neat and fine for a night or so, this second cluster of closely-knit units lacks the character and style of the timber chalets. Face-brick walls, metal windows, older fittings, less airy and no fireplaces… You get the picture? Good. So don’t compromise.
Cango Mountain Resort serves either as a destination in itself, with six swimming pools, a dam and a host of other activities (from putt-putt to pedal boats), or as a useful springboard to Oudtshoorn’s surrounding attractions, including the Cango Caves, ostrich and camel farms, crocodiles and tigers at the Wildlife Ranch, the Big 5, dramatic waterfalls and a mixed bag of adventure activities - quad biking, abseiling, kayaking and rock climbing among them. All of which lie a few miles up and down the road.
"Both me and my wife enjoyed our stay in the log cabin. Cango Mountain resort is situated between the lovely mountain area on your way to the Cango caves. It is set in a undisturbed nature setting which is both beautiful and quite. The only concern was that there is pretty much no or little cellphone signal for both MTN and Vodacom. (Although this was a welcome relief away from the normal daily distractions, which is the point of a holiday trip anyway.)"

"The resort is neat and clean with lovely walk ways and views of the mountains and valleys. Lots to see and do in and around Oudtshoorn. We were very disappointed to find on arrival that there were people painting the roof of our chalet and they continued to do so until about 17h00. This we considered to be be inconsiderate, noisy and an invasion of our privacy. All in all we had a nice stay. The dog was great company as well."

"Towels and linen tatty, chalet not very clean." (Lisa)

"Loved it!!"

"We had an awesome, relaxing stay!! My husband went fishing at the resort and at a dam a stone's throw away. We went for walks in the mountain, checked out the waterfall, and the chalet area has it own private pool away from the tent sites."
