Vermaaklikheid Snapshot
Never heard of it, have you? Well, Vermaaklikheid (310km from Cape Town) does exist and it does so barely noticeable on the backburner of time. This miniature olde worlde village of thatch and white-wash along the tidal Duiwenhoks River – 10km from the sea and 30km off the N2 – is a rural rarity that has barely budged, never mind kept up with, the changing times. The ambience is unique, a product of moody waters, creased pastoral valley and dry Karoo-like outskirts. And Vermaaklikheid is peaceful, utterly peaceful.
Things To Do
- No two ways about it, Vermaakliheid spells RELAXATION. Settle into a sunny corner, a slab of chocolate on one side, a cheap paperback on the other; float on the healing waters of the Duiwenhoks River; cast a line for steenbras, cob and spotted grunter in these same waters; stroll through the fynbos, climb a koppie and follow the spoor of God’s little creatures; tick off 100-or-so bird species common to the area. And then, as the sun turns to red and the mountains to black, light a Camel, inhale deeply and smile smugly to yourself.
