De Rust Snapshot

Originally a farm, De Rust proper was established in 1900. It's a sleepy little village bisected by one main artery flanked by few dirt roads lined by Karoo houses and pepper trees. Tucked near the foot of the Swartberg Mountains, the village is your gateway to the impressive Meiringspoort, which separates the Klein from Groot Karoo.

There isn’t a huge amount to do in De Rust itself. For most coming this way, it's a quick stop-off for breakfast and coffee at one or several spots along the main drag. This said, there is plenty outdoor and gorgeous scenery to be found close by in the Swartberg and Kammanassie Mountains.

Whether it’s just for an amble and caffeine fix, stop and enjoy - you never know what you might find.

Things To Do

  • The town is home to a number of artists. Lend your support by popping into the Village Art Gallery.

  • Stop off for coffee or a hearty meal at one of several restaurants.

  • Hop on the wagon and take a donkey cart trip through the town.

  • For scenery second to none take a drive through the spectacular Meiringspoort . There’s a short hike in the poort to a waterfall and swimming hole.
