Witsand Snapshot
Witsand (known among cynics as Windsand) sits atop a dune at the mouth of the Breede River, about 300km from Cape Town. It is a fast growing village where sparse vegetation struggles for a hold in the loose sand, and basic fisherman-type houses splashed with a touch of Greece contend with more ambitious face-brick abodes. Despite the development that is occuring on its shores, Witsand retains an appealing wild quality, thanks to the long unspoilt beach and massive estuary - the latter a marine leisure park of angling and boating in numerous guises. What's more, as a major breeding ground for the southern right whale, the bay is said to have a greater whale population than much-touted Hermanus.
Things To Do
- The unspoilt beaches and huge estuary offer the perfect place to enjoy all sorts of activities ranging from birdwatching (more than 290 species to admire), whale-watching (the presence of the whale nursery means whale-watching can only take place on land) and of course any type of watersport that tickles your fancy.
- Check out the town's historical heritage at the Kraaltjie Harbour, Barry Woolshed or the Barry Memorial Church which is also a national monument).
- For a different perspective on Witsand, enjoy a sunset sea cruise up to the bush pub.
- If you prefer to keep your feet on dry land, you can enjoy some golf, putt-putt pt even a game of bowls.
