Budget Getaways Review
For starters let's dip into Driftwood's guest book. "I loved the single space cottage - decor fitted my personality. If I had a home like this I'd be the happiest person alive" (Adrienne from Pretoria). "Absolutely lovely. We enjoyed being in an environment where so much is hand-crafted and attention is given to beautify every item." That from Capetonians Julie and Retha.
Two cottages make up the Driftwood family - Driftwood Cottage and Gumtree Cottage - both set above Napier and it's modest attractions and restaurants, and both offering a touch of old world country living.
Driftwood Cottage (sleeps 3) is fronted by a sprawling garden with two ponds, and a picturesque outlook over the village below and pretty farmlands stretching out towards the Sonderend mountains beyond. Exploiting the outlook is a strategically-appointed sundowner deck.
A creative medley of decor and furniture fills the interior, including a four-poster bed and Victorian bath. The cottage is best suited to a couple, with or without young child as there's a single bed in living area; an extra bed can also be arranged should there be call for it.
The cottage is fully equipped, with plenty in the way of little extras to while away your weekend e.g. music, books and games. What's more, for an extra R100 it's pet-friendly, with an enclosing fence to curb Fido's wanderlust.
Wandering a little down the road, Gumtree Cottage (sleeps 6) occupies a spacious plot of land, with large gumtree taking centre-stage. Better suited than Driftwood to a family group, it has two double rooms and a walk-through kids room with two single beds.
You've got a comfy lounge, equipped farm-style kitchen and two bathrooms, including Victorian bath. Outdoor areas are in plentiful supply with three covered patio's circling the cottage; there's even a north-facing Juliet balcony where couples can sit and soak up the winter rays and mutter sweet-nothings to each other.
An entertainment area under the large gum, with extra touches like Weber braai, wooden swing and hammock, will keep both kids and adults in the open, lapping up that fresh Overberg air.
Apart from hanging out in Napier, a brisk stroll away, the coast is a mere 30 minutes by car - with a choice of Arniston, Struisbaai and Agulhas.
A laid-back and accommodating spot combining good location, individual personality and friendly owners.
"Amazing venue, and amazing hosts - Paul & Linda were the best hosts, and meeting them added extra magic to an already wonderful trip."

"We had a lovely stay at this pet-friendly place. The whole town was pet-friendly and I can highly recommend Napier. Driftwood cottage is on a quiet little street but It's just a few minutes walk away from the center of town. Highly recommended!"

"We were lucky to sleep in both Driftwood and Gumtree Cottage, due to reservations by other guests. That's how we exploited both Driftwood's four-poster bed and Gumtree's sundowner deck! It's lovely to see the effort Paul and Linda have put into decorating the cottages. And there is so much to see. Paul was very hospital and a helping hand. A lot of the places we visited and liked in the Overberg were his advise. He knows his area!"
