Budget Getaways Review
Lying just off the N1 and only 10km from the pleasures of Matjiesfontein, Keurkloof is a massive Karoo farm offering a self-catering weekend at its soul-soothing best.
A charming cottage, refurbished and decorated with a perfectionist's eye, is provided to this end.
Besides a load of personal touches you can anticipate the following: cool cement floors and lime-washed ceilings, classic Cape furniture (including a large Oregon dining table) and original paintings, choice linen and thick towels, beautiful brass fittings in the bathroom and a neat country kitchen with new appliances.
Modern convenience comes courtesy of eco-friendly solar lights, a gas stove, fridge and hot water for the Victorian bath and shower, while the fireplace keeps the cottage warm in winter.
Stepping into the Karoo light, the generous lavender-fringed stoep has a built-in braai, plenty of shade and views to eternity and back.
For activity… Experience the vast canvas of the Karoo sky and the absolute silence; savour the Karoo’s unique scents; keep an eye out for small game and a surprising variety of birds; bury yourself in Olive Schreiner's, The Story of an African Farm; swim in the farm dam; take long walks across the veld; toast the flame-orange sunsets; pop in to Matjiesfontein for caffeine and culture... Now tell us there’s nothing to do in the Karoo!
Oh...and if that roadtrip up the N1 sounds like too much to handle, there's a private airstrip on the farm, so you could always just fly in!
No two ways about it: Keurkloof is a gem.
"It was just bliss, a haven of peace and tranquility. Apart from the fabulous setting, we so appreciated all the lovely touches in the cottage."

"What a gem! If you want solitude, this is the place to visit. Long leisurely walks across the air strip into the riverbed and beyond. Starry nights with only crickets and the crackling fire on the stoep. The cottage has everything you might need, and I mean everything, from spices, olive oil, rusks etc. This is truly Karoo hospitality. Gail please keep up the standard, this was a unique experience and we will definitely be back for an extended stay."

"The website gave a good idea of what to expect, however we were blown away by all the little fine touches and extras which you don't normally find. The cottage is warm and cosy, the options for sitting outside (even when windy) are great. I can recommend this highly to anyone who wants some peace and quiet, and excellent hosts."

"This was a perfect experience in every sense. The house is immaculate and well-equipped with good quality linen and utensils. Excellent value for money. Gail and Steve even had a bottle of champagne delivered to us for Xmas. They truly go the extra mile for their guests. The wide open Karoo veld with it's majestic sunsets were breathtaking. "A fantastic haven of peace & tranquility, with lots of personal touches and excellent support from Gail. The perfect spot for watching the stars, doing some relaxed trail-running on the jeep tracks, enjoying swimming in the farm dam or just chilling on the cool lapa and staring into the vast distance. We all loved it, granny, kids and parents! And a few bottles of Keurkloof home-made Olive Oil will help remind us for weeks to come of this magical spot in the Karoo."

"Keurkloof Karoo Cottage is the perfect getaway for a family at a great price. The cottage is neat and clean with modern facilities and Gail has gone the extra mile with her personal touch all around the cottage. In the heart of the Karoo, there is absolute peace and quiet and you don't need to worry about the hustle and bustle of city life. Watch the sunrise and sunsets on the horizon and listen to the sheep in the veld as they go about their day. The two horses are spectacular and friendly and are curious about new comers who are visiting. An absolute gem. Nothing was forgotten. Everything that you need and more."

"The Keurkloof Karoo Cottage is located in an endless space of absolute bliss. The time we spent listening to the voices of the Karoo farm and wildlife, gazing at the wonder of the flawless night sky and walking through the timeless landscape was a truly humbling experience. As a runner, this vast expanse allows you to run freely, no set course (there are a few jeep tracks for the less adventurous trail runner), no time limit, no interference - just you and nature. And if you are lucky, you wont be the only one running through the bush as there are various buck in the area too. The cottage itself tends to all your needs, is well kept and is a safe place away from home and is pet friendly. The time I spent at Keurkloof Cottage, with my family, is one that I will always remember."

"The cottage is beautifully furnished, amazing attention to detail and so much consideration has been made to make ones stay very comfortable indeed. The landscape is beautiful, quiet and bucks, rabbits and birds can be seen. After being on the road for such a while, this stay was definitely the most relaxing.
