Budget Getaways Review

Feeling those nostalgic pangs for a good ol’ South African family holiday? Ma plying Pa with sustenance at the front of the station wagon, the unruly brood waging war across imaginary vinyl borders at the back, the constant 'When are we going to get there?"

Wimpy may well have replaced the egg sarmies and rust-pocked Thermos, and DVD players the Ritalin, but the Eastern Cape is still home to the charming family hotel of old.

Kings Lodge in Hogsback is one of these institutions - a simple and comfortable family-centric establishment that’ll have you and the kids hungry for more.

The guest feedback spilling from the guest ranks bodes well for a happy stay: “A tranquil, scenic environment with great food and wonderful Eastern Cape hospitality.” “A really comfortable and family-friendly hotel.” “Not my first and certainly not my last visit!”

Set on 10 acres of wooded gardens and lawns right in the heart of Hogsback, the lodge centers around a chilled communal area featuring a restaurant - that serves everything from home-cooked meals to buffet breakfast - a cozy bar, outside braai area, and a large family lounge, TV and games room - all heated by roaring fireplaces.

A welcome gem in the King’s crown (and much utilized by exhausted parents), is the kids play area, with added bonus of a lodge staff member to keep the laaities entertained.

Accommodation-wise, you’ve got a choice of four self-catering cottages set slightly away from the lodge, or a range of room options within the lodge itself.

The self-catering cottages range in size from a six sleeper (Rainbow Cottage) for larger families, to a double unit suitable for couples (Shady Cottage). Each has its own patio, kitchen and DSTV. All have fireplaces except for Sunrise, which has a heater.

The lodge rooms come in the form of twins, doubles and triples. All are ensuite with baths and hand showers. Heaters and electric blankets will keep you alive during the Swiss-like winter, and tea and coffee is on the house. As with the cottages, DSTV is standard throughout.

Additional services and facilities on offer are childcare and babysitting options (use 'em!), a full laundry facility, and a swimming pool and bowling green for summer. Goes without saying that this is one of few places where the parents might actually have a holiday.

Adding to the general ease of a King's Lodge stay… You’ve got the village right at your fingertips, and the starting point of some popular walks and trails. And then for the kids, there's a labyrinth at The Edge, The Camelot Fairy Meander and some easy walks to the nearby waterfalls.

Nostalgic holidaying like it used to be.

Guest Reviews

"The food was really good. Friday night three-course meal was out of this world and real value for money. Graig and his wife is doing a superb job."

"King's Lodge Hotel is the best, I went there with my colleagues and we had a wonderful time. We received a very warmth welcoming and as a results we made an arrangement that when ever we need a getaway we will go back."

"I enjoyed my stay in Kings Lodge, in fact I wish I could go there every weekend."

"Old world hotel. The staff are amazing and breakfasts really good. Roads are fine via Alice to get to Hogsback but once there you need a 4x4 or bakkie to properly explore all the attractions or some of the other accommodation. We loved Hogsback and all the people we had contact with. An artist or photographers paradise."

"Very unusual family feel place. Unique in its old world appeal. We just had a night here, but would have liked to have stayed longer. Everyone was friendly and helpful."
