Budget Getaways Review
You generally know you're onto something good when past-guests happily volunteer their opinions. In the case of Kite Cottage folks were pretty keen to praise…
"By far the best thing about Kite Cottage is its quaintness, and its setting - it's got to be the only weekend home that adheres to the old appealing idea of 'beach cottage' - no double storey fortress here… We stayed there twice already, and will go again…"
"We have enjoyed a few stays at Kite Cottage and would definitely be back for another visit. The cottage is private, cute and comfortable…"
"A charming gem nestled in a fynbos paradise. This is where real relaxation takes place and special holiday memories are made."
Located in Vermont - a poorer cousin of Hermanus - and set back about 1km from the rugged coastline and a kiddie-friendly tidal pool, Kite Cottage is a relaxed timber abode that certainly does seem to have some of that appealing 'fishermen's cottage' character. Unlike some of the less desirable abodes dotted around the neighbourhood.
Getting to the tidal pool and the ocean involves a walk of about 1km, while closer at hand (350m) is a salt-water pan rich in birdlife and a good spot for a family picnic.
To get to Onrus Beach (also kiddie-friendly) you can either take the car or travel light and enjoy the 45-minute walk.
The general decor is 'white-wash beach shack' inspired and befitting a barefoot family holiday by the sea. The living area is open-plan and easygoing, with a separate bedroom with double bed for mom and dad, and a double bunk for the kids.
No need to bring your linen or bath towels, these are thrown into the deal. There isn't a fireplace inside but there's good braaing to be had outdoors, with enough seating for all. The kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need for simple eating, with a big fridge for that essential case of Black Label quarts.
Like one of the above previous guests states: "The proof of the pudding is in the return visits."
"Pretty basic (usually not a problem for us at all). Very surprised to find this getaway in such a established neighborhood with the only holiday cottage being Kite Cottage. The place is in pretty bad need of TLC, it looks way better on the website. Did not expect this getaway to be smack bang in the middle of Vermont suburbia. The residents a unfriendly bunch and I can imagine want Kite Cottage gone or upgraded to fit in with the rest of Seeduif Street. We left a day early. Enjoyed the birds though."

"Fantastic little Cottage! If you like it rustic, and cheap, this is a great little getaway. I will definitely go and stay there again."

"Had a lovely time at the Kite Cottage. We were especially impressed with the facilities - clean dishes, toilet paper, detergents, bedding, towels ... more than we bargained for the price. We love the rustic feel that Kite Cottage has. Perhaps a new braai drum and grass to be cut would be in order, though."

"Pretty rustic (which is okay for us) but could do with a bit of love and care to spruce it up a bit."

"Excellent venue."

"We have enjoyed a few stays at Kite Cottage and would definitely be back for another visit. The cottage is private, cute and comfortable. The appeal of staying at the cottage is its proximity to Hermanus and all the surrounding attractions. The proof of the pudding is in the return visits!"

"Excellent place if you want to break away. Only 1 hour from Cape Town. You are 15 minutes walk from the most beautiful coastline. Along the paths next to the ocean it is 30 minutes to Onrus strand. There are also strand areas like Breakfast Bay. It is a wooden cottage with a fenced-in large natural erven. An excellent place."

"By far the best thing about Kite Cottage is its quaintness, and its setting - it's got to be the only weekend home that adheres to the old appealing idea of 'beach cottage' - no double storey fortress here. The wooden cottage lies in a completely indigenous garden, has easy access to walks and to the beach, and allows for a peaceful and slow weekend at a very reasonable cost. We've stayed there twice already, and will go again..."
