Budget Getaways Review

Try this on for size...

A spectacular oceanfront setting; an old farmhouse and attached rondawel that can house a small country with ease; springbok, zebra, eland, buffalo, kudu and reindeer sightings from the comfort of your stoep; a huge outdoor entertainment/braai area sheltered by a canopy of trees; a dorp (Gouritzmond) close by, with two restaurants, a bottle-store and a fishmonger; an affordable price tag. Kuierbos is all this and more.

Our gut sense is that it's one of those endangered holiday spots that could one day be gobbled up by some hungry coastal developer; but until that day comes it offers a great group getaway, a place where families and mates can spend quality time in a hassle-free space.

Huis Kuierbos Huis
and Rondawel (which combined, can sleep 18 total), are tailor-built for this very purpose. Both are relaxed and comfortable and fully equipped.

Kuierbos comprises the main house and together with its Rondawel offers an assortment of double beds (3), singles (2), bunk beds (2) and sleeper couches (3).

Hot water is via gas heating, and your lighting via solar power.

Outside there's a convivial deck and barbie under the trees, with plenty in the way of benches and tables for the fish braai-over. It's a 300m stroll to the rocky beach, but for better swimming and some adventurous snorkelling in the tidal pool, head to Gouritzmond proper.

Catch a fish, braai, buy a fish, braai, go for a swim, braai, hang out in the garden, braai, ride your bike, braai... You won't be bored.

Guest Reviews

"Great setting, accommodation could do with some work and a lick of paint."

"The accommodation at Kuierbos was slightly disappointing, though the outdoor area was nice."

"We had an extremely disappointing stay at Kuierbos. This is the first time I've ever seen something on Budget Getaways and been disappointed by it, but my whole family was unhappy here. The natural surroundings were very beautiful, Albert and Bridget (the staff) were great and we enjoyed the boma, but apart from that it wasn't a pleasant experience at all. To start with, the house at Kuierbos does not look anything like the photographs on the website. From the photos on the accommodation page of the website, we expected a bright, modern kitchen, a charming bathroom with claw foot bathtub and modern fittings, and bright, spacious, airy bedrooms. When we looked at the photos again after arriving, we saw that all of the above-mentioned photographs must be at Laventelbos (the second house), as they are nothing like the facilities at Kuierbos, and the photographs of Kuierbos are all in black and white (very misleading, as they look 'classic', instead of crummy). This is not only misleading but creates false expectations of the quality of the accommodation. We had a whole list of complaints of things that weren't working (shower had no hot water, broken toilet, leak etc etc) and although Albert tried to fix it while we were there, the truth is it's just run-down. We had booked for 5 days over New Year and left a day early - on January 1st. Enough said!"

"I am really sorry that Bridget and her group did not enjoy their stay. The accommodation is very old, and we try to keep it original. We never tried to mislead people, and will take everything referirng to Laventelbos off our website. The trouble with the geyser was unfortunate, as we could not attend to it ourselves - my dad died unexpectedly on Christmas Eve, and we had to attend to the funeral and other affairs. The stove is old, but working. We will, however, replace it with an electric one. Although we can not replace the buildings, and we do not wish to change the character of the Kuierbos we do take note of the complaints, and will make changes to better the facilities."

"What a beautiful and relaxing place for a great getaway from the hustle-and-bustle!! Perfect for friends and families with or without children! The setting is gorgeous, the accomodation is farm-style perfect, with the additional cleaning services available so you don't have to lift a finger! Our stay was very comfortable and relaxing, our souls washed clean with the serenity and the stunning views. A definite re-visit is required... We might even make it a regular thing! Thank you for a brilliant holiday!"

"What an awesome family bonding weekend we had at Laventalbos - most definitely a 'must return' Thanks to Marietjie for having everything in tip-top for our arrival and weekend stay :-)"

"Heerlike kuierplek. Onthou die speletjies en boeke vir die slegte weer. Lieflike seeuitsig en toegang."
