A 2000ha working farm in the midst of the Swartberg Mountains near De Rust, Meijers Rust offers a secluded escape into the mountainous wilds of the Klein Karoo.
Decked with a spread of accommodation options, the farm offer oodles in the way of action and R&R, depending on what takes your fancy.
Flipping through the pages of Trip Advisor reveals a happy string of ex-guests. “Loved every moment of our stay,” says one. “Top quality, value for money,” gushes another.
Accommodation comes in three forms here. For couples there are four semi-detached self-catering Chalets built to typical Karoo style, with sash windows and timber shutters. All are open-plan, with Queen bed, ensuite bathroom with Victorian bath, fully-equipped kitchen, and a covered voorstoep with braai.
The Milk Barn (sleeps 4) is well suited to families, with a separate main bedroom with Queen bed and additional bunk beds in the living room for the kids. Simple, rustic and well equipped, Milk Barn sits alongside the main house. It comes with covered patio with plenty of privacy and is surrounded by lawned gardens.
The Stone House is for the adventurous romantic - a renovated 1850’s stone and thatch cottage in a secluded spot surrounded by mountains. The cottage sleeps two in a four-poster Queen bed, flanked by an open bathroom with Victorian bath and equipped kitchen. Exposed beams and thatch, thick mud plastered walls and screened floors all add to the appeal here. Note: You’ll need a high clearance vehicle to reach this one.
The Upper Campground is a hardened canvas addict’s dream. Accessible only by 4X4 vehicle, the campsite offers great views over the Kammanassie and Outeniqua Mountains. The site is booked on an exclusive basis and has water, ablutions with hot showers and many hiking trails and even short walks to the nearby mountain pools and waterfalls.
With hiking and biking trails galore, a communal swimming pool, De Rust and Meiringspoort just down the road, and even Oudtshoorn within reach for day trips, Meijers Rust is a real Macoy Karoo escape in the heart of the Swartberg.
