Budget Getaways Review
Until recently, even the relatively well-travelled BG team hadn’t heard of Kaysers Beach. But what we did find out after a spot of Googling is that this sleepy seaside village has an important place in the annals of ichthyology - it was here that a mysterious sea creature, the Coelacanth, was caught just before the outbreak of World War II.
Trivia aside, Kaysers and its immediate coastline appears to have avoided the onslaught of the Pretoria Tuscan villa, and today still holds a fond place in the hearts of fishermen and families looking for a bit of old school beach holiday.
Bring on Millwood Cottage, a modest icon of its era. Set in a lovely garden, a mere five minutes walk from the beach, this is a charming old abode with whitewashed walls, timber shutters, and sufficiently chilled vibe to fast-track you into deserved R&R.
Made up of two bedrooms - a double ensuite with bath, and a second ensuite with bunk beds - Millwood is highly suited to a small family.
The living room is open-plan (with fireplace), and leads onto a courtyard and sheltered braai area.
Over in the far corner is an equipped kitchen and breakfast counter.
All linen and bath towels are supplied, though you need to pack your own beach towels.
Activities are mostly centered around the beach, a casual doddle from your front door. Heading right takes you down to 'Swimming Beach', while a little further along you have Three Sisters, a popular fishing spot. More of the same can be had at the Chalumna/Tyolomnqa River mouth - this is about an hour's walk down the coast.
There’s a small store in the village for basic supplies and braai wood. Friday evening sees the local Social Club swing open its doors for good old fish and chips and Eisbein. For more coffee shops and restaurants, Kidds Beach is 15 kays down the road.
Easy going holiday vibe, a dollop of history, a wild and a rugged coastline to explore, Millwood Cottage is right up BG alley.
"A beautiful cottage. Every need catered for. A really great getaway. Awesome."

"If a picture is worth a thousand words, then an experience is worth a thousand pictures. We have had a splendid time and thank you for making us feel so welcome. The cottage is absolutely perfect and had everything and even more than we expected. My wife loved the cottage and the fact that we could hear the sea in the morning when she woke up. It put her in a good mood for the rest of the day. I, more than my wife, loved the fact that there are not thousands of people trampling each other on the beach, also that there is no mall, movies or others money eating places. The kids loved the beach, the rocks, the pools, named the crabs. It was indeed a holiday that we will all remember."
