Budget Getaways Review
A single self-catering cottage, lying above the lazy Groenfontein gravel road, the big drawcard at Oasis is the spectacular view - a soft watercolour of pastoral bliss, of sheep and donkeys and horses and simple farm buildings powdercoated by dust, rising up gradually into the hard cliffs of the towering Swartberg. Catch the view at the right time of the day, at the right season, and you will find yourself questioning the very fabric of your city life.
The cottage itself, which has a 3-star TGCSA rating is a fairly practical, yet comfortable, affair, just down the way from your friendly hosts' Reinhold and Maurine.
With one double bedroom and a single bed in the lounge area it sleeps two to three guests and is well equipped for a self-catering weekend or longer. Linen, towels and braai wood are provided, as is a long list of useful extras in the kitchenette, such as tea, coffee, milk, sugar and other homely touches that you can discover for yourself.
As is the case with the rest of the valley there's no Eskom, instead solar, gas, candles and open fire. For winter, which can get pretty cold in these parts, Oasis has a ceramic fireplace.
A deep covered stoep fronts the cottage, where you're likely to spend a lot of your stay.
The rest of your time can be filled with mountain biking and walking up and down Groenfontein, strolling down to the river (50m away) for a dip, picnic and snooze under the willows, or venturing further afield to the Swartberg Pass, Prince Albert, Oudtshoorn and Calitzdorp itself.
