Budget Getaways Review
If seclusion, off-the-grid living (no Eskom), and total escape from humanity are high on your wishlist, then River Farm Cottage has your name written all over it!
This wonderful cottage sits in the shadow of towering Cederberg cliffs, with the Threeriver stream trickling directly past. Beyond that, lovely views up and down the surrounding kloofs and valleys.
While the main farmhouse (unoccupied most of the year) sits alongside the cottage, your privacy is secured via a thick tract of vegetation. The only likely disrupter to your peace and quiet will be the clickety-clack of cow and donkey hooves on their way to higher grazing.
In keeping with the remote setting, the 1.5km dirt track to the cottage is best handled by a high clearance vehicle or 4X4.
Taking a poke around the cottage, you’ve got two large bedrooms, the main ensuite (shower only) and with Queen bed, the second with a pair of three-quarters. There is a second shared bathroom, which comes with outdoor shower.
The living area is open-plan to an equipped kitchen, with gas oven and gas fridge. The cottage opens up via double glass doors from the living area onto a covered deck with comfy outdoor furniture. Just the spot to while away the day with a trashy novel.
Plenty outdoor action is on tap. Rock climbing, swimming - there's a clear water swimming hole in the Threeriver stream - rock climbing, farm walks, etc. Bring your bike if you like rough and rocky farm roads.
There won't be much call to make the 25 kay trek into Citrusdal, but if you need to scratch the itch, there are a few restaurants, coffee shops, and the soothing Citrusdal Baths.
Lovely one!
Additional Info
- Access to River Farm requires a vehicle with high ground clearance, preferably a 4x4 vehicle.
"What a hidden gem. Limit to no cellphone reception and the scenery is beautiful. My kids enjoyed it so much playing in the river streams and around the cottage. Fantastic place to switch off and rest."

Hi Carlo, thank you so much for your positive review. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay so much.
Kind regards

"Lovely spot to relax away from the rat race. Very well appointed and tastefully decorated house with many braai spots, swimming, easy hiking and grade 2 4x4 trail thru the un-spoilt valley. We did not see anyone the entire time. Friendly owners. You need decent ground clearance to get there, and 4x4 in winter after rains I'd imagine. Poor cell reception which is always a bonus when looking to disconnect."

"Cosy cottage that is homey on a rainy day with the indoor fireplace, but on a hot day one can enjoy the outside deck and laze around. Come sunset, a fire in the outside firepit is perfect for marshmallow smoors and great conversations, while fireflies and bright stars add to the ambiance. The sounds of the river and birds chirping enhances that tranquil feel... we would definitely be back to escape city life."

"Very tranquil getaway, private and peaceful. Beautiful accommodation, beautiful surrounds, clean and spacious. Things to note: There is no electricity (can be tricky for long stays), getting through the river beds is not for the average car. Love that you can bring dogs along. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Thanks for a peaceful escape."

"We had a wonderful time here. The house was clean and neat and we loved sitting on the porch at night under the stars. We went in over new years, and it was HOT, but the house is in shade and there are lots of spots to relax with a good book. The river is not very high this time of year, but we could still sit in the river pools to cool off. We loved being able to completely disconnect and live off the grid for a few days."

"Absolutely perfect in every way! A beautiful setting, nestled between the mountains and with a river running past. It could not get better. Nice walks and places to sit and enjoy the scenery. House was perfect and well equipped, more than enough space for our family of 3 and of course our dog. Will definitely be returning. Thank you."

"We had a lovely stay at River Cottage in January despite temperatures souring to 42 degrees. There is ample shade, beautiful cool swimming spots and plenty of areas to relax during the day"

"Absolutely love this place and cannot wait to visit again, the outdoor shower is magical. The entire weekend was so peaceful with no signal and no electricity making us appreciate life outside of our busy schedules."

"Splendid! A lovely house nestled away between the mountains along a river. Everything was in working order and the days rolled along seamlessly. From the house, the views of the mountains are spectacular. The river is a little way off, 30 m, which you do not see from the house. But it's so close and just down a little path from where you can swim in shallow pools. The place is pet friendly :) The smallest drawback for us is that we're avid hikers and from the house there is only a jeep track to walk along and no dedicated trails up into the hills and mountains. Nonetheless, we still had a wonderful time and will definitely visit again."

"All in all we had a great escape from the city. The cottage provided everything necessary and the attention to detail was perfect."

"A cosy comfortable cottage in a beautifully secluded spot - we didn't see or hear another soul while we were there but we did spot a good variety of the endemic bird life. Very efficient fireplace for chilly nights. Lovely outdoor shower (there's an indoor one too) and a cute pond for dipping in. The kitchen is very well equipped and the bedding is comfy and warm. We had an excellent time. I would definitely heed the advice about having a high clearance vehicle (not necessarily a 4x4) as there is a spot where you really do need one if you want to drive right up to the cottage."

"What an absolute gem! We had a great time there, so peaceful and quiet... The facilities was well kept and had everything that we needed. Thanks owners!"

"Peacefull and isolated. Be aware if you are out in nature there are creepy crawlies, snakes etc so had to keep windows closed at night."

"This lovely place really exceeded our wildest expectations in every respect. The house is comfortable, clean, neat and equipped with everything you can imagine ... and more. We did not miss electricity or cellphones for one minute. One can truly switch off and unwind here and enjoy nature - the most stressful activity was to decide when to light the fire for the braai. You have to experience it yourself!"
