Budget Getaways Review
Rooiheuwel-Noord is a sheep and dairy farm found off a pleasant dirt road cutting through green folded pastures.
Set on a hill below an impressive mountain, the guest cottages are a close-knit group of three renovated labourer dwellings - so think about booking all three if you want the place to yourself.
The view comes close to perfect, encompassing wheatlands, the distant lights of Botrivier and Babylonstoren’s lofty peaks.
The cottages are basic, salt-of-the-earth units, yet are fully equipped, with fireplaces and rustic decor. In other words, they're child-proof and hassle-free, making this a relaxed spot for frazzled parents who don't want to spend every minute of their weekend keeping the little darlings off the furniture. That said, the afore mentioned darlings will be so busy looking for chicken eggs and feeding the farm animals, that they'll hopefully be exhausted before it comes to clambering on furniture.
Long strolls, fishing for black bass in the dam or taking a plunge yourself (during the summer months), wandering along to watch the cows get milked, dabbling in a spot of star gazing or getting the kids kite's out for a flip (Not an urban power line in sight.) These are all part and parcel of a weekend itinerary at Rooiheuwel, as is the boma, jungle gym, trampoline and marked hiking and mountain bike trails.
So, if you place convenience, great views, excellent value and chilled atmosphere above designer décor and absolute privacy, then Rooiheuwel-Noord is a well worth visiting.

"What an amazing little gem! The hosts are super friendly and helpful, and we did not need for anything. The fresh milk that we could purchase was an added bonus. This was exactly what we needed!"

"Fantastic place. I highly recommend it for a group getaway. The cottages were basic but had everything we needed. The kids had so fun milking the cows, collecting eggs and swimming in the dam. It is a perfect family getaway."

"We rented all three houses for a weekend camp with a senior group from a local church. The houses were very well equipped and perfect for our purposes. We loved the farm style approach, the views, the animals around us and we even heard some lions roaring from a nearby farm. The facilities were clean and had everything we needed - just bring your own food and drinks. Our hosts were wonderful - even brought us a tray full of eggs when we left ours at home. Highly recommended for a down to earth farm breakaway!"

"A lovely rustic getaway with wonderful farm experiences for the children! The hosts are very friendly and welcoming and guests are free to roam the farm. We saw a calf being born and fed the calves and watched the milking and had lovely walks. Wonderful fireplace inside the cottage that helped warm the cottage through. We will be back!"

"The place was very clean. Petro was accommodating and helpful. The kids thoroughly enjoyed milking the cows, jumping on the trampoline and just being free to wander off on the farm. We could relax and not worry about the kids or entertaining them as they found lots to do. The peace and quiet was a bonus. Thank you Petro for your hospitality and affording us a place to just relax and getaway from our daily busy lives in the city."

"Wow, what an amazing experience. To get away from the city and come to this was the best decision by far. Definitely will be back. Best for family getaways."

"We enjoyed our break from the city life thoroughly, we even milked the cows and got some fresh milk. The cottages have all necessities. The kids loved the dollhouse, play park and pool while the adults enjoyed the day relaxing at the boma. Definite value for money!"

"It was unbelievable - we had a wonderful weekend! The owners did make us feel at home we even had to milk the cows ourselves. I would defnetly go again and I plan to go in September this year again."

"A piece of paradise. The tranquility and peace is amazing while just a 40 minute drive from central Cape Town. We visited Cape Town twice and could not wait to get back to the chalets. Petra and her husband together with her father in law were most helpful. The children enjoyed watching the cows being milked and then feeding the calves. In their exploration they stumbled upon tortoise's and even a porcupine. The milk was delicious and anything fresher was still in the cow. Highly recommended if you're visiting Cape Town but don't want the hustle and bustle of city life. I had never heard of Bot River prior to my stay. Thank You Petra and family for the bonus night because you did not want us driving back to Durban on Christmas Day."

"How do you put endless landscapes, beautiful scenery, peace and quiet and amazing in one word? Rooiheuwel Noord is an awesome setting that allows for endless talks around a bonfire that seats at least 20 people. The stars are so close, it almost feels like we could touch them, between a wish or two. Petra is an awesome host and her stepdad a hardworking and gentle man with a brilliant sense of humor. I wish I could stay there every day of my life. The kids loved everything about the place - definitely worth it. Cannot wait to go there during winter. They have plenty of wood and a fireplace waiting just for you."

"Sadly our cottage was not very clean. Inside the fridge was dirty. The shower had enough black mould to really put you off showering. The floor had dead bugs on it (I suspect it was last cleaned long before we got there), the table had crumbs and sticky coffee spots on it. We had to wash all the cutlery and crockery before we used it. We also had no pots - were we supposed to cook spaghetti in a frying pan?! Lovely location but the cottage was very disappointing. I knew the cottage would be basic, basic is fine but dirty is not acceptable."

Getaway Reply
I am sorry to hear about your bad experience. I was stuck in meetings and did not manage to double check the cottage prior to your arrival. Our appointed cleaning lady is currently on maternity leave till next month and we have a stand in, obviously not as efficient. I am in contact with a contractor for the much needed upgrade and minor repairs, i.e a new fire place (purchased), paint and repairs to the ceiling. You're invited for a weekend in a months time, on the house, to rectify your experience.

"The cottages are basic, but comfortable. We had a fantastic time and the hosts are very friendly and willing to help. The milk from the farm dairy is awesome. We will be back. We loved the dogs and our dogs loved the farm."

"If peace, quiet & "Away from the City-Buzz" is what you need then this is just the place! I was sick as a dog when we had to leave, but even so we had an awesome time. The hospitality of Petra and her family is truly amazing - and needless to say our kids (and dog) didn't want leave. They had an awesome time just running wild, milking cows and clambering over hay bundles - and we felt so safe away from it all. You'll definitely see us back again soon."

"Really good getaway if you are looking to get away from the noise and rush of the city life and just have a nice and relaxing stay. I would definitely recommend."

"Ons het 'n baie ontspanne naweek by Rooiheuwel Noord gehad.

"We just love that place in winter. Excellent value for money, the owners are so friendly and imagine having fresh milk every day. You can help milk the cows, go for walks and just chill in front of the fireplace. I will recommend Rooiheuwel Noord to anyone. We will definitely be back."

"The perfect holiday - the kids were safe and having fun, no worries for mom and dad - adventure all ages - our kids are 9,6 and 2 and we enjoyed every minute - from fishing in the dam, viewing milking in the diary, feeding the calves, and the adventure on a 4x4 through oats, barley and green beans to visit the sheep and cows, as we drive up the hills and through the river!! What an amazing breath of fresh air. Most importantly the hospitality of the Theron Family - Petra you are amazing. Your personal touch is magical. Thank you. ps:We love the fresh milk on the door step, back yard trampoline and hikes, and mountain waterfall! :)"

"If you have toddlers then this place is perfect! Our girls had the time of their lives. Our stay had milking cows, a small tractor ride, petting the baby calves, feeding the 100's of sheep in the mountains, long bike rides ... and I haven't even begun to talk about the hours they spent on trampoline, swings, sandpit and playhouse. A more perfect place I'm yet to find that keeps the kids this occupied. We are definitely going back!"

"Had a lovely time there with the kids. We were two couples and the kids had a good time with the animals and the view at sunset was amazing. The Theron's were extremely helpful with the few things we forgot and none of us had any complaints would go back anytime."

Sal beslis weer teruggaan."

"Ons is die afgelope klompie jare gereelde besoekers by Rooiheuwel Noord. Dis die heerlikste plek om na die stad se gejaag weer werklik "mens" te word en jou kop skoon te kry. Die uitsig vanaf die huisies is pragtig."
