Budget Getaways Review
De Rust village is without doubt in a rather serene setting. Know as the gateway to the Klein Karoo, this lovely little hamlet sits at the southern end of the majestic Meiringspoort and is surrounded by the towering peaks of the Swartberg Mountains.
In such gorgeous surrounds it’s only fitting to have an equally appealing abode at which to put your feet up and relish in the charm of village life. As the name suggests, Rus in De Rust offers all that, in the quintessential Karoo homestead. Beautifully restored, Rus in De Rust has the perfect balance of old-world charm and modern furnishings.
Sitting pretty on Burger Street, a quiet side lane off the main drag, it’s that classic wrap-around verandah that sets the tone on arrival. Here a morning coffee or an evening sundowner will no doubt go down equally smoothly at respective times of day. Step through the front door and you’ve got high volume ceilings, the golden glow of hardwood floors, light interior tones and an eclectic mix of vintage and modern furnishings.
Space wise, the house is made of a large living and dining area which leads off to a separate kitchen. The kitchen is fully equipped with modern touches as well as an indoor fireplace and braai to warm things up during winter. If snuggling up in front of the TV in the evening and getting stuck into your favourite Netflix series is your thing, fear not, there’s a great entertainment room with smart TV and full WiFi.
The two bedrooms are spacious and decked out with percale linen on a queen and double bed respectively. True to the house’s era, there is one massive bathroom, which is fitted with a large shower, loo and towels are provided. Both bedrooms as well as the living area open out onto the wrap-around verandah, a great way of combining the interior and outdoor living space. In the garden there are also outdoor braai facilities as well as a plunge pool for cooling off in summer.
Now, if you've got the teenagers or in-laws in tow, the self-contained outbuilding makes a great option for two people. This little "studio apartment" has two three-quarter beds, an ensuite bathroom with shower and a kitchenette with fridge and tea / coffee making facilities.
Being central to the village, heading down to the coffee shops, restaurants and scattering of galleries and shops really is a doddle. It’s only the wonders of Meiringspoort, the nearby wine or olive estates or the many miles of quiet gravel roads that you’d need to get into your car for. That said, if you’re a hiker or biker, this is your springboard to many a mile of lonely back routes to enjoy.
Beautifully appointed and centrally located, this certainly is a great value getaway. What’s more, if you can drag yourself away from that voorstoep, there’s a heap of things to do in the nearby surrounds.
