Budget Getaways Review
Beautifully positioned amidst the rolling hills of the Hemel en Aarde Valley, Rustic Hideaways not only lies within easy reach of Hermanus, but is also within easy strike of a platter of quality wine estates, good mountain bike trails and some gobsmacking scenery.
The five accommodation options are dotted a fair distance apart, around a series of farm dams.
The Farmhouse, Drie Jongens and The Lake House are the three larger units, while The Dairy House and Shiraz Cottage are more compact cottage-style abodes. All are tastefully decorated, with open timber beams, fireplaces and a classic farmstyle vibe.
Looking at each in detail, The Farmhouse has a total four double bedrooms (one ensuite) and three bathrooms. The living area and kitchen are open-plan and spacious, with a large fireplace. Up in the loft, you’ve got two extra double beds and an entertainment area with DSTV. The Farmhouse has its own swimming pool and full length patio.
Drie Jongens is the biggest of the bunch. Well suited to a family, the house packs four bedrooms (two kings, one twin, and a family room with a king and twin beds) and three bathrooms; two bedrooms are ensuite. Again, the house is spacious and modern and sports a swimming pool, rolling lawns and even a tree house for the kids.
The Dairy House comes with compact cottage feel and three upstairs bedrooms - two doubles and a twin. The living area is flowy and open-plan to an equipped farm kitchen, and opens out via double doors to a patio and braai area. There is no TV, but with five hectares of fields and forests around the cottage, who needs the distraction?
Shiraz Cottage is a cozy four sleeper with views over the mountains and farm dam. The loft room has a double bed and ensuite bathroom, while down on ground level you have another double room with a separate bathroom (bath, shower and loo). The lounge, with fireplace and dining area is open plan to a fully equipped kitchen. Throw open the double doors and you've got a spacious undercover patio. Shiraz comes with it's own splash pool and open-air hot shower.
Last up is The Lake House, finished in light tones with a ructic-luxury vibe. This house has a large loft bedroom with two double beds, and an additional three bedrooms on ground level (king, queen and 2 three-quarter beds). The king and queen bedroom each have ensuite bathrooms, while there is an additional shared bathroom downstairs as well. The house has a spacious living area with fireplace and open plan kitchen, which leads out onto a covered patio with lovely views over the surrounding mountains. This one has a splash pool, outdoor pizza oven and braai. Upstairs in the loft is TV lounge.
Each abode comes with outdoor braai and entertainment areas, private parking, all linen and towels and wifi. (a fee is charged for wifi)
With oodles of style, lots to do nearby, a setting second to none, a friendly host, 'Rustic' is a term that should be taken with a tiny pinch of salt. As far as we’re concerned, this one's a gem.
"We stayed the weekend at The Dairy on the De Werf Country Estate property and it was absolutely amazing. The setting of the cottage a few metres away from the dams, the birdlife, the walks, the country surrounds and of course, the lovely cottage. It is also excellently located to visit all the wine estates, restaurants and attractions in the Hemel-and-Aarde Valley. It was also so welcoming and dog-friendly - my dog absolutely loved cooling off in the dams and exploring the estate. Will definitely be back."
