Budget Getaways Review
Simple uncluttered lines, whitewashed walls, flowy beach vibe, views, Atlantic rollers offloading onto the nearby beach… If this isn't enough to have you reaching for the boogie boards, umbrellas and Frisbee, then read on…
Sandpiper Cottage is a charming abode decorated with a mix of casual cottage furniture, splashes of pale ocean blues and walls adorned with original artworks courtesy of your artist hosts.
Sleeping a total of six, the cottage is split into two levels: a living area and two bedrooms (double and twin) on ground level. Upstairs, another bedroom with two single beds and a small lounge area, equipped with coffee making facilities and bar fridge, open out to large deck and ocean vistas.
For your morning hose-down, there's a full bathroom with shower and bath, as well as a separate loo and outdoor shower to keep the sand out the house.
The main living area forms the central focus downstairs, with lounge and a big fireplace (which doubles as indoor braai) to keep things cosy. The open-plan kitchen comes with all you need to whip up a crayfish thermidor lunch.
Outside, a covered veranda (portable braai ready and waiting) leads onto an enclosed garden, with off-street parking to the side.
The nearest swimming beach (beware icy water!) is a mere 60m from the front door. Also within uber-easy reach are ocean cruises, canoe hire, a couple of restaurants and coffee shops in and around Britannia Bay. Up the road, Rocherpan and Velddrift offer great birding, while waiting for the catch of the day at the harbour at St Helena Bay makes for great social entertainment.
Easy to get to from the city and hassle-free, Sandpiper can either be served up cold as a last-minute urban breakout, or as a languid West Coast feast.
"Well what can I say, VIEWS! VIEWS! VIEWS! The cottage is perfectly placed for access to the most amazing beaches and the views from the deck will simply take your breath away. A lovely cottage with everything you need. Can't wait to go back."

"Sound of the rolling seas and the sweet salty smell of the ocean - what more can a person want? Sea to the left, sea to the center and sea to the right - no "budget" getaway can offer you that! A lovely cottage with stunning views. We had a really relaxing time away."

"Lovely and very cosy cottage nearby the beach, which is a selling point. We love the deck and view of the bay. We hope to return again."

"Sandpiper Cottage is a true budget getaway. It's not right on the beachfront so you don't have to pay absolute premiums but the view from the upstairs deck spans the entire beach and you can watch the waves crashing on the shore all day long. You can hear them breaking as you go to sleep (that's all you hear) and its just 3 minutes or less to walk to the beach. We saw seals one day and thoroughly enjoyed the bench with a view around the corner from the house which looks over to the Oystercatcher Hotel on the other side of the bay. In every way it was an ideal holiday. Anemi (who opened up for us) was a great host and we even went to watch the rugby at her house down the road which was kind of her."

"We were 2 families and an extra bathroom would have helped."

"It was such a lovely break from the city. We fell asleep to the sound of the crashing waves, and the sunsets were absolutely magical. It was wonderful to watch the birds and tortoises in the garden. We enjoyed a quintessential South African holiday of braais and sunny skies. The neighbourhood feels safe, and it's peaceful and dark at night, which meant that we always slept well. We will definitely visit again. We had almost everything we needed to make this a relaxing home-from-home. We were sad to leave and are checking our calendars to see when next we can visit. Thank you for giving us a wonderful Autumn Break."

"Stunning views from the upper deck! Close to a lovely beach. Lying in bed and hearing the waves. We really enjoyed it. An added bonus the kaggel/braai inside."
