Budget Getaways Review
Here’s a sturdy old farmhouse typical of those built in the early half of the last century. You know the type… acres of space, a long wide passage for sock surfers, high ceilings, creaky Oregon floors, unfussy furnishings, laid-back plaas vibe.
This particular one is 20km from Paarl and a most useful base for your next Winelands wedding or group hangout.
Sonop sits in a lush garden, beyond that 150ha of organic wine farm backed by the Paardeberg mountains.
This eight-sleeper abode features four double rooms - two of these are on ensuite, and all are decked with linen, towels, fans and patios.
True to traditional style, the living area has enough space to swing a cat, with comfy couches centered around the fireplace. Leading off from here is your dining room and separate kitchen with its own table. The kitchen appears well stocked.
Moving along, there's an enclosed sunroom with comfortable seating, a built-in braai, and sliding doors zipping open to the swimming pool. Floating on your Lilo to sound of sizzling chops - what more could SA Man wish for?
Out and about, there’s plenty in the way of farm walks and casual riding, while venturing further afield, wine farms and tastings will be your blurred focus.
Sonop can be taken either on a self-catering or B&B basis. It's your call.
Close to home. Farmy atmosphere. Nice garden. A pool for summer. Great for a group outing.
"It is a beautiful spacious house, but it needs a bit of loving tender care."

"There was just a smell in the house that was not so nice, namely in the kitchen, otherwise it was fantastic."

"The guest house at the Sonop Wine farm was the perfect value for money getaway for a group of old high school friends. The house is really massive. We we're a group of 8 but a few more could sleep comfortably. The pool is a huge attraction to the house and it is fitting that 1 of the 2 lounges and majority of the bedrooms open to it. We made ourselves at home from arrival and had a great time until the early hours of the morning without anyone complaining about us being too noisy. We didn't miss out on any rugby action as the house is equipped with full bouquet DSTV. The experience was surreal, sharing memories and having a good laugh on the big cozy couches around the fireplace. Being surrounded by 150ha of farmland made it the perfect getaway. The group of friends are starting to call the guest house their second home - it is only a 1 hour drive from Southern Suburbs where we are all based. We will definitely be returning."

"We had a fantastic time at Sonop, it was my third time at the venue. The pool is super...fantastic beds and feels so secluded but so close to home - a definite must go to. We've booked for a 4th time!"

"The guest house on Sonop Wine Farm was perfect for our tri-annual boys weekend out of town. The house is huge, we never felt on top of each other, and there are four big bedrooms which sleep nine people comfortably, so all five of us had a bed of our own. The lounge and two of the bedrooms open on to a very big swimming pool, although when we visited in winter, the pool was full of leaves, and hadnt been cleaned for a while. Fortunately the weather was not conducive to swimming, so the dirty pool was not an issue, but I do hope that it will be cleaned once spring arrives, as it is a very big draw card. The house is stocked with pretty much everything that you will need, so it is a real home away from home. There is a large screen TV, with DSTV, and there are smaller TVs all over the house, so you can watch pretty much anywhere you want to. We had a power cut on the Saturday night (not load-shedding) and I called Arlene, the farm manager, who said she would send someone out immediately to have a look. Fortunately the power came back on shortly afterwards, so it was not necessary for anyone to come out, but the fact that Arlene was prepared to send someone was definitely a positive! The farm is close to Cape Town, which is a big plus; it only took us an hour and ten minutes to get there from Lakeside. All in all, we had a great time at Sonop, and would definitely visit again."
