Budget Getaways Review
“Hey, bru, it’s the berries,” goes the ol’ surf saying, referring to anything with high appeal: from waves to wetsuits, to a little shack on the Elands Bay outskirts.
A rustic log cabin within earshot of the beach and spilling chilled-out Endless Summer charm, The Berries is a far cry from your average trying-too-hard luxury beach house. And looking at some of the feedback, it's hitting the right note: “We enjoyed every minute of our stay - just wish it could have been longer!” says but one Cape Town couple.
Simply furnished and fitting eight quite comfortably, what we have here is two double bedrooms, plus an extra sleeping alcove with four bunk beds for the Combi stowaways. While mattress covers, pillows and pillow cases are provided, you need to bring your own bedding and towels.
The living area is open-plan, with a scattering of couches and a large dining table with benches. Hanging from the exposed rafters are surf boards, braai tongs and fishing rods - iconic symbols of the SA good life.
Zip open the double doors and take in those rollers peeling off Baboon Point. Turn landwards and gaze upon the rocky mountain outcrops.
Protected from the bite of the notorious south-easter is a large timber deck and a braai pit in the garden.
Apart from the close proximity to the beach, there’s plenty to keep you busy when the waves are down. Take a hike around Baboon Point to the nearby bushman paintings. Climb to the top of the mountain for an awesome view over Elands and Verlorenvlei. Try a spot of spot of fishing, sand- and kite-boarding. Stroll along the beach, canoe-and-birdwatch on Verlorenvlei. Head out on your bike…
For a real Macoy surf bunkdown, The Berries is your pozzie.

"A nice cabin in a good location, but it needs more cupboards in the kitchen and bunkroom, a decent braai/barbecue facility - possibly on the deck at the back - trying to do so on the ground and in the sand with the wind blowing is no fun at all."

"We enjoyed our stay a lot. the only a bit negative thing was that some of the dishes and the eating table were not properly clean. Otherwise it is beautiful and we will definitely go to the Berries again."
