Budget Getaways Review
The Hen House is no chicken coop. Far from it. While its historic origins may be fowl, the architectural makeover places it firmly in the ranks of 'stylish country getaway'.
Delving into the guestbook, the reviews paint an appealing picture indeed. “Beautifully appointed and decorated. Quiet, calm and restorative with a lovely tranquil garden and friendly hosts," says one happy guest. “Not only is the place beautifully furnished, but the outside garden gives visitors a chance to unwind after a busy day,” gushes another.
Stepping into the cottage, the living area has plenty in the way of tasteful touches: exposed timber beams, a mix of cement and timber floors, a wood-burning stove, a spacious open-plan kitchen, a convivial dining area.
Two separate verandas lead out from the living area, equipped with a portable braai. The garden is well shaded with indigenous trees and a decent spread of lawn - built for kids and birdwatchers alike.
Your sleeping quarters come in the form of a ensuite Queen with superb view, and a double on ground level with separate bathroom. All linen and towels are provided.
A separate two-sleeper rondavel has recently been added - just the thing for those irksome teenagers/in-laws.
Napier’s delights are a short walk down the road, while heading out of town you’ve got hiking trails, back roads to explore and photograph, and the coastal hotspots of Arniston and Cape Agulhus less than an hour away.
Elegant cottage, soothing setting, plenty village charm, The Hen House appears to be one desirable roost.
"The Hen House was a fantastic place to stay - we had 5 nights. There are two double beds in the main house and two singles in the rondavel outside which the teenage kids stayed in and enjoyed - only disadvantage to that is the toilets are at the main house so either a quick one in the bushes or back to the main house were there is a downstairs toilet. The house is cosy and really home away from home and has a fireplace to keep you warm during the cold winter months, just make sure to find dry wood we struggled. The nice thing is it's not too far from Bredasdorp/Aghullas/Hermanus/Arniston and Caledon with lots of wine farms on the doorsteps if that is your thing."

"We had the privilege of staying at The Hen House in Napier during the cold winter July holiday. The furnace made it a very cosy and warm weekend away from home. We would recommend this unit as a home away from home and would love to stay over again. Thanks to Lynn's attention to detail of the interior we felt very spoiled."

"Cute cottage however if you are looking for peace and quiet not ideal. On a busy road and dogs barking."

"Lovely, lovely place! We can highly recommend the Hen House! Our children also loved the garden and played in the outside cottage for hours. Thanks for a lovely weekend, hope to be back in the future."

"The Hen House was booked purely for the setting and it didn't disappoint! We didn't even know where Napier was, but this is a beautiful village cottage, inside and out. Short drives to Arniston, Struisbaai and Cape Agulhas were wonderful, village to seaside in under an hour! What more could tired teachers ask for? Perhaps a tv so that we could catch up on all the soapies we miss during term time. Have already recommended The Hen House to colleagues."

"A big thanks to Ken and Lyn. The Hen house was amazing, the cottage had all the comforts of home and was a pleasure to stay at. Our two huskies loved the open garden, although the wooden slates in some places were a little wide but none the less with a little supervision the dogs had as much fun as we did. The peace and tranquility of Napier is fantastic and the soul food was quickly replenished. Just a thought the fridge was too small and the March heat took it's tole but other than that we had a jol."

"We booked this venue for our cousin and family for a two day stay and it was the perfect place. Not only is the place beautifully furnished but the outside garden gives visitors a chance to unwind after a busy day. We have booked it again already for friends from Australia."
