What we like here is the happy mix of rustic simplicity and Victorian-style grandeur.
And, looking at its Facebook page, we're not alone in giving the place the Budget Getaways preliminary thumbs up: "Stunning self-catering venue in Clarens within walking distance from all the shops, galleries and restaurants. Beautiful views and fully equipped to make your stay as comfortable as possible! I love this unit!"
Hardly a 'cottage', Nells Bells is a grand double-storey affair. Sleeping-wise, it offers three nicely-appointed bedrooms - two doubles and one with single beds. One of the bedroom flows onto the balcony and its lovely outlook over Mount Horeb. The house can sleep a total eight.
The open-plan lounge is a comfortable affair with DSTV and fireplace - essential to survive the Clarens winter. Timber floors and beams inject further cosiness.
Should you decide eat in, the simple kitchen is well equipped, with full stove/oven, plenty shiny pots and pans etc.
For Moi time, there's a cosy reading corner leading out to the veranda and more of those soothing Highlands views.
After a hard day working the dorp, Nells Bells will be a happy nest to return to. Kick off the shoes, light the braai, pull the cork on a fine vino, and settle in for a balmy evening under the Free State stars.
