Budget Getaways Review

This gorgeous farm, tucked away in the foothills of the Langeberg Mountains, off the Garcia Pass near Riversdale is the idyllic setting for a proper family farm holiday. Well, actually make that quite a few families. If you’re wanting to rally the troops and round up your entire street for a weekend away, this is the spot, as the accommodation options at Windhoek really do cater for numbers.

Let’s jump right in then, kicking off with the flagship abode, that being The Barn. The Barn sleeps a whopping 37 people. Yip, you read it right, 37! It’s essentially a big ol’ out building, which has been converted into rustic, yet comfortable accommodation. There are four bedrooms, three of which sleep six, while the fourth bedroom sleeps 10. There are then two additional, four sleeper rooms, with private entrances. All rooms contain a mix of double beds and additional bunk beds. Bathrooms are split into two sets of ablutions with loo’s and showers. (Bring your own towels)

There’s a spacious indoor entertainment area with braai facilities, sound system and seating, a large and well equipped kitchen to cater for the masses and a separate games room with TV, pool table and table tennis. Outdoors you’ve got a great fire pit with log seating, surrounded by plenty of open space to chill.

Now, that’s the hordes sorted. If you’re after something a little less cavernous, but need to be close to the action, The Rondavel is your spot. A stones throw from The Barn, this little unit sleeps four in an open-plan setup, made up of double bed and bunk beds. The Rondavel is equipped with a small kitchen (microwave, fridge, kettle and toaster), has a bathroom with bath, basin and loo and an outside braai area.

Now, for those wanting a little solitude and off-grid, then Die Kliphuisie is a charming little six sleeper, tucked away in a remote location only accessible with a 4x4. This rustic stone cottage sleeps six, in two bedrooms (a double and two bunk beds). There’s a bathroom with loo and shower. It is off grid, meaning you’ve got a gas fridge, hob and geyser and a large fireplace in the kitchen to keep things cosy. There is also a braai area outside.

Activity wise there is oodles of outdoor action to be had. Hikes into the surrounding mountains and to the nearby waterfall are blissful. Kilometres of gravel roads are great for mountain biking, canoeing and fishing options are in no short supply, as well as horse riding trails offered nearby.

So, whether you’re a crowd or a couple, there’s an option for everyone at Windhoek Farm. Now get packing!

"Book your stay, and another week. Breathtaking views and loads of outdoor activities for all ages AND pet friendly! We stayed an extra two nights and regret not staying longer. This place is a MUST for backpackers and botanists as it's right next to the Sleeping Beauty mountain range with an insane diversity of indigenous plants all over. No chance of boredom.10/10 would recommend and definitely go again. 4x4 def required to get to the campsite but our lovely host (Francelle) had no problem getting us to our destination."
