Winterton & Central Drakensberg Snapshot
Spanning a short section of the Tugela River, Winterton is a comely little town; it's also one you'll likely head through on your way to Berg Central. To this day the town retains its pioneering vibe, with plenty historic buildings, an energetic tourist scene, and a gorgeous mountain backdrop - as such, an appealing spot to hang around in. Apart from a decent platter of restaurants, coffee shops and curio outlets, there are a number of Anglo Boer War historic sites and buildings that are worth a visit. The informative Winterton Museum on Church Street will also fill a few useful hours. Winterton done, the lure of nearby Champagne Castle, Cathedral and Cathkin Peak is irresistible. This is Nature at her best, with a generous side dish of hiking trails, trout and bass fishing, horse riding, hang-gliding, and other energetic pursuits.

- Canyoning, zip-lining and abseiling adventures in and around some of the nearby kloofs are another more adventurous option.
- A varied list of hiking trails are on offer within a few kays of the town centre. among them the well-known Cathedral Peak and Sentinel Peak trails.
