Victoria Bay Snapshot

Victoria Bay is a tiny Garden Route gem at the end of a winding lane leading off the N2, 9km from George. It comprises little more than a short sandy beach below steep  mountain slopes, a grassed area for spreading the towel, safe swimming and brilliant surfing. The best thing about Victoria Bay is that level land is in short supply and consequently there's only one row of houses along the beachfront - a total of 12 in fact, and these among the most dramatically appointed along the Garden Route. Apart from a small kiosk to feed the hordes of hungry teenage surfers and other day visitors, there is nothing in the way of supermarkets and restaurants, which only adds to Victoria Bay's rustic persona.

Things To Do

  • Crank up your favourite Beach Boys, wax the stick and hit the water... Whether long or short-boarder, the break off Vic Bay is manna from the Gods of surf. Those that can't surf can either hang around with the bored groupies on the shore or don the water-wings and take to the tidal pool.

  • Southern right, hump backs and Bryde whales are frequently sighted lolling in the bay between June and October, while dolphins are common throughout the year.

  • A chicken pie and chips at the beachfront kiosk is unlikely to quell any desire for a slap-up meal on the town. If you are not up to driving to George, the local B&Bs offer a Mr Delivery-style service from several fast-food joints in the town.
