Now, back in the day (mid-seventies), Marine Drive - the seafront track linking Struisbaai to Cape Agulhas - hadn't seen much in the way of development. In fact, one of few beach shacks was a rough and ready little rondawel that offered many a happy holiday, both then and to this day.
'Africa's southern most Rondawel' has stood the test of time and sits proud on the promenade. Although now shadowed by a bigger home, it still sports a nice view of the sea.
The rondawel has received a splash of post-modern architecture in the form of a fancy new facade, but other than that the interior retains that laid-back holiday vibe - simple, yet comfortable furnishings and plenty of space. It's perfect for couples or a family with small kids.
Looking at the layout, there's a spacious central living area and equipped, open-plan kitchen with two-plate stove, microwave, fridge-freezer.
The living area has a TV (bring own decoder and cables if you want DSTV) and a Jetmaster. Leading off from the living area is a double bedroom with additional three-quarter bed for the kids, and a bathroom with loo, shower and basin.
Outside, you have enough privacy from the main house in front. You’ve got a lekker braai area and big tree for shade. Crack open the chardonnay here, or mozey across the road for sundowners on the beach.
There’s ample to do in the area as well, with a working harbour nearby (fresh fish for sale), great beaches, and of the course Africa’s most southerly point at Cape Agulhas. There are also a few eateries at the harbour itself.
