Budget Getaways Review

Tucked away in a secluded area known as “Agter Pakhuis”, a rugged landscape of craggy mountains, which bursts into colour during flower season, Alpha Excelsior sits on the boundary of the Cederberg Wilderness area. With this in mind, it goes without saying that for hikers, climbers and the MTB gang, this getaway makes a great base from which to get stuck into all that’s on offer in the area.

That said, there’s no shortage of outdoor fun on the farm itself. From gentle strolls through the olive groves and vineyards to swimming, canoeing and even slack-lining at the farm dam, sundowners on the nearby koppies or a short hike to the waterfalls. There’s even a communal swimming pool…all in all a healthy dollop of outdoor action at Alpha Excelsior.

Now, if you thought the activities list was impressive, let’s jump to the accommodation. You’ve got three options here, farmhouses, cottages or caravans. Taking a look at the two large houses first, The Homestead - is an airy Cape Dutch style, thatch roofed home overlooking the Cab Sav vineyards. This classic abode has two ensuite rooms with queen and single beds and a loft room with four single beds. There’s a large kitchen, dining room and vine covered verandah. The house sleeps up to 10.

Next up, The Old Farmhouse is over a century old and sports one ensuite room with double bed, two additional double rooms and a room with three single beds. The kitchen is your classic farm style setup with a functioning Dover stove adding to the charm. The vine covered stoep and its view over the farm swimming pool could keep you in its grips for hours on end. The house sleeps 10.

Both houses are equipped with linen, towels and have WiFi.

Moving along to the two cottages, Riverside Cottage is a couples delight. This little stone and wood-clad cottage is privately positioned amongst a grove of pines and is open plan in setup. There’s a kitchenette, bathroom with shower and a patio with built in braai, as well as a lovely little garden area at the front of the cottage.

Weavers Cottage is well suited to a small family, with one bedroom which has a double and single bed, as well as an additional double sleeper couch in the living area. There’s a bathroom with shower, an equipped kitchenette and an indoor fireplace.

Both cottages have aircon and fans for summer, include linen and towels and have WiFi.

Last up we’ve got the Donkey Camp and its seven equipped caravans. Great for a group of friends sharing, the camp has gorgeous views of the northern Cederberg Mountains. The caravans, each one shaded by a roofed shelter, are centred around the Leopard Lapa, a covered dining and braai area which forms the social hub of the camp. Each caravan has an outside sitting area, is equipped with double beds, has electricity and includes a fridge/freezer, gas cooker, cutlery and crockery and an outside tap. There is a central ablution area with loo’s, wash basins and showers. Six of the caravans sleep two, with one of them able to sleep four (two adults and two small kids). Bedding and towels, as well as WiFi are included in all.

From sprawling farm houses to budget conscious caravanning, Alpha Excelsior really does cater for anyone. What’s more, Fido can join you here, as long as he’s well behaved. And, if you thought it couldn't get better, then make sure you enquire about the breakfast and braai baskets, they come in mighty handy when you’re just not in the mood to prepare a meal.

Now all you have to do is BOOK!
