Budget Getaways Review
Lying 9km from Stanford, on a small working farm of vineyards, springbuck, a bonsai nursery and dams stocked with trout, black bass and tilapia, Arum Lily Cottage and Aloe Cottage are a pair of rustic cottages framed by beautiful views of the Kleinrivier mountains.
Both are rustic unpretentious abodes, with comfortable furnishings, including a few nice traditional pieces dotted here and there. For those chilly Overberg nights, Arum Lily Cottage has an indoor woodstove, while Aloe comes with an open fireplace.
Arum accommodates four (on one double and two single beds), while Aloe sleeps two on single beds.
Both cottages are sheltered by a latte stoep and the farm dam is also close by if you're beginning to feel a little hot under the collar and in need of a refreshing dunk.
Linen and towels are provided, both units have a braai area, and a fly-fishing permit is included in the deal - a definite hook if you're into fishing.
The farm has recently started making its own wines and you are welcome to pop along for a tasting.
Flipping through the guestbook, it certainly looks like most guests have left the farm with a smile on their faces: "Had a great time. So peaceful and well situated, could have stayed longer. Fishing good." And this from a Scottish couple: "Returned to this haven of tranquility at the end of our trip. Fabulous."
Chances are, you'll leave feeling the same way.
"Rustic cottage, nothing fancy. Just a great holiday and excellent value for money! Lovely for kids. Stunning view at sunset, came back to town feeling relaxed and refreshed!"

"Amazing and peaceful. Naas is a super friendly host and their wines are superb. The birds are abundant. Hearing the lions roar in the distance, from the sanctuary not far away, is like being on safari. We bought some port and will have to go back for more soon. The gravel road is not the best for a low car but for a bakkie it would be perfect. I would recommend the Arum Lily cottage to anyone who wants to get away from the world for a while."

"A lovely comfortable atmosphere, friendly host and lovely fly-fishing setting. We had a super time. Nothing too fancy (which is what we like) but everything we needed to enjoy the beautiful countryside."

"Naas was most welcoming. They left a bottle of their own farm's wine, rusks, milk etc. for us on arrival. The place was in a stunning setting and we had a great time! Many thanks to them."

"Very comfortable accommodation on a lovely, peaceful farm. The hospitality was excellent with a great ambiance."

"The accommodation was very pleasant. On our arrival we received a complimentary bottle of their house wine from the owner, Naas - thank you and appreciated. The facility had all the necessary and was clean. The water was brownish but that was due the underground spring supply (it's drinkable), but I would suggest rather take your own drinking water with. Fishing for bass in the beautiful dam was very difficult due to the 2 cold fronts - x 6 bass for the weekend. I was very satisfied given the circumstances, except I lost what would have been the biggest bass due to using barbless hooks (due to trout in the same dam) and as prescribed by the owner. There's always a next time. All in all - a very comfortable stay and we will return Thank you Naas."

"If you are looking for an affordable getaway close to Stanford that offers privacy and tranquility, you can find it at Aloe Cottage. We appreciated the personal touches like rusks and a complimentary bottle of delicious Vaalvlei wine. A visit to Birkenhead Brewery down the road, is highly recommended for beer tasting and the ploughman's platter."

"Vaalvlei was such a beautiful setting! As soon as we arrived we felt far from the city and really loved being able to walk around near the dams and along the fynbos trail. Naas, the owner, is such a kind and hospitable gentleman and we really felt like we had a home away from home. If you visit Vaalvlei be sure to book one of your meals at Mariana's in Stanford, what a treat."

"Arum Lily is an unpretentious cottage with a view across part of the nature reserve. Very peaceful setting with easy access to Stanford and the surrounding attractions. If you're looking for "chill time" and "non-flashy", this getaway is ideal."

"We loved our weekend in Aloe Cottage. Peaceful, lovely setting. The indoor braai/ fire place was a winner as we had a couple of rainy days, just what we needed. We were greeted on arrival and checked on during our stay which made us feel welcome."

"We enjoyed our stay!"

"We needed a quiet place to literally get-away and relax, and Aloe Cottage was perfect. Our favourite place on the farm was the two flyfishing dams, the odd bakkie rumbled by on the distant dirt road, but otherwise it was totally peaceful. Our hosts, Elsabee and Naas were so hospitable; we tasted their farm wine (they also showed us how they make it, as we were lucky to be there right after harvest time. Plus, there was a comp bottle waiting for us in the fridge), we learned about all the frogs on the farm from Naas, and were astonished by Elsabee's huge collection of bonzai's. The facilities in Aloe Cottage were very simple and rustic, but we had everything we needed, plus some extra touches, like the well positioned paper towel roll and extra bags for recylcing. We will definitely try to go back with fly-fishing friends to stay in Arum Lily Cottage which has an incredible view. Thanks Naas and Elsabee!"
