Budget Getaways Review
Built at a time when Bredasdorp comprised little more than a few dusty tracks, a farmer's market and an imposing church, Bloekomhuisie has witnessed a thing or two from its voorstoep.
A hundred or so years on, this rustic little abode overlooking Hoopstraat has received a deserved makeover, into a characterful getaway tailored to couples or small families out for a few going nowhere slowly days exploring the Overberg surrounds and jagged coastline.
As with other Cape cottages of its era, Bloekom is your typical tin-roofed, thick-walled number with sash windows, Oregon floors and high ceilings.
Stepping inside, the simple layout comprises two twin bedrooms with shared bathroom (bath and shower), flanked by a spacious lounge kitted with DSTV, a separate kitchen with dining table, and a big ol’ fireplace/indoor braai forming the main social hub. Homely indeed.
Bloekomhuisie comes decked with all you’ll need for your Bredasdorp bash: towels, linen, a fenced garden for Fido (yip, he’s welcome here too) and a healthy dose of country charm.
Getting out and about involves little more than a short walk into town (don't miss the The Shipwreck Museum) and hassle-free outings to nearby De Hoop Nature Reserve, Arniston (wonderful beach walk), the obligatory expedition to Africa’s southernmost tip at Agulhas, or an afternoon at the nearby Heuningberg Nature Reserve.
