Budget Getaways Review

Got no tent, can't camp? No longer the case, intrepid Budget traveller.

With the arrival of Cedar Kloof Eco Tented Villages, the hassle and logistics of a camping weekend is a thing of the past. In fact, if the blurb, "You only bring food and clothes," is anything to go by, any preconceived associations you might have about camping - leaking tents, missing poles, hard ground and sand fleas - are in for a serious shake up.

The site is set amidst 30ha of Cederberg fynbos, 10km from Citrusdal along the road to The Baths. Taking a closer look, we're not talking a dodge municipal experience, folks; we're talking wooden walkways down to the crystal clear waters of the Olifants River, green grass, gorgeous sunsets, private jetties with their own canoe, languid days filled with swimming, braaing, and getting to know your friendly neighbours.

Each 'camping village' holds six max, and comprises a Bedouin freeform marquee with outlook over the fynbos, and a mere 10m from the water's edge.

Pitched nearby are canvas tents equipped with foam mattresses, cotton percale bedding, blankets and towels.

If that's not enough to satisfy, you've got your own equipped kitchen area with electric lighting, power point, chairs, table, and the obligatory braai grid. Talk about roughing it in style.

Ablutions (hot showers with "donkey" heaters and flush toilets) are communal (sorry!), so is the fridge for the frosties, freezer and microwave.

If all this doesn't convert you into an evangelical happy camper, nothing will.

Slip out of that comfort zone, give Cedar Kloof a bash, and let us know what you find.
